REFEREES

IT is just as well that Championship referees are to go full-time as of next season.

It does not guarantee there won’t be mistakes, of course. They are only human. But if officiating is their full-time job it minimises the risk.

Darren Drysdale made a big error on Saturday which potentially cost the Clarets the win.

George Boyd’s goalbound shot was scooped over by right back Lee Peltier, but instead of a penalty and sending off Drysdale awarded a goal kick.

Burnley left Cardiff with a point after a dram-atic finale, but it could have been so different.

CHARACTER

BURNLEY simply do not know when they are beaten.

It was a trait that took them a long way in the promotion season and earned them some big Premier League points.

Relegation could have dented that spirit, but it is encouraging to see the Clarets have maintained the same focus that, when the chips are down, they just keep going until they get something.

DEAN MARNEY

WHAT a return to action for the midfielder.

He has had to bide his time before getting back into the first team fold following a lengthy cruciate lay-off, and subsequent niggling injuries.

But when he got his chance against Cardiff, he took it, supplying the cross which led to the last gasp equaliser.

He has now targeted a return to the line-up, but given manager Sean Dyche’s consistent team selection he might have to wait a little longer, and make an impact when he can to boost his cause.
