BURNLEY midfielder Scott Arfield is considering representing Canada at international level.

The 27-year-old qualifies for the country through his Toronto-born father and he has been in touch to discuss the possibility of switching allegiance.

Arfield represented Scotland, the country of his birth, at Under-19 and Under-21 level, but has so far failed to gain senior recognition.

“At the stage I’m at in my career, it would be a great life experience to go and represent Canada," Arfield said in Burnley's matchday programme for the clash against Brighton.

“Once you’ve played club football for so long, you want to see where it takes you and I’ve been in contact with Canada so it’s something I might do.

“I’ve also been speaking to David Edgar and he’s been banging the drum about what a good set up they’ve got there."

Although he has been watched by Scotland, Arfield has not received a call-up for any of Gordon Strachan's squads and the former Huddersfield man admits he is now edging towards representing Canada instead.

“Going back home at international breaks and seeing people I grew up with on the council estate, that’s all they ever bang on about is how playing for Scotland would be the pinnacle," he said.

“I think international football is exactly that, it’s the top level, and as you go on you see things in different ways and I perhaps don’t have as stronger feeling as I once did about playing for Scotland.

“There’s no ill-feeling towards Scotland or anything like that but I’m probably leaning towards Canada.”
