BURNLEY defender Kevin Long says he is relishing his loan move to Barnsley, after recovering from cruciate knee ligament surgery.

The Irishman was named on the bench for the Clarets’ last game at Wolves, following question marks over Ben Mee’s fitness beforehand.

Long had played a succession of games for the club’s development squad.

But Burnley this week sanctioned a one-month deal with the League One Tykes to work on Long’s senior match fitness.

“I’ve been craving to get out on loan for ages because I’m itching to play,” he said.

“The gaffer rang me and told me there was a chance to go to Barnsley and when I heard I jumped at the opportunity really.

“The only way you can improve is by playing games.

“The two lads playing ahead of me (at Burnley) are flying so I can’t complain.

“I’m at an age now where I need to be playing games and hopefully this loan spell will benefit me.”

Long could make his debut at Oldham today.
