TENDAYI Darikwa says Burnley face a test to bounce back from their first home defeat of the season.

But the right back believes there is enough character in the Clarets camp to put Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Reading down to experience, learn from mistakes and make amends at Rotherham on Friday.

Burnley gave themselves a mountain to climb by conceding twice in the opening nine minutes.

Darikwa scored his first for the club to give them a fighting chance of salvaging a point.

But it proved a bitter sweet moment for the right back as Reading held on for the win - needing a goalline clearance from Burnley-born Oliver Norwood to secure it.

“It was disappointing to start the way we did. We can’t give goals away as cheaply as what we did,” said Darikwa.

“We got the one goal but we couldn’t get back into the game and get the point.

“It’s a special moment for me to get my first goal for the football club but it’s irrelevant if you get nothing out of the game. We’ve just got to dust ourselves down and move on to Friday at Rotherham.

“It’s a test for us - it’s a test going into every game you play, but I think the characters we’ve got and the manager we’ve got we’ll forget about the defeat and move on.

“There was frustration and disappointment after the game, but it’s football and we can’t dwell on this, it’s about moving onto the next game and putting it right there.

“We’ll analyse it, look at the mistakes and move on to Rotherham on Friday and hopefully we can get the three points and get another unbeaten run going.”

Burnley went into the Reading having seen a four-game winning run end with a goalless draw at Derby County on Monday.

They were confident of stretching their unbeaten run to six against the in-form Royals, but were not switched on in the opening exchanges, and it cost them.

Burnley went on to dominate possession, but were only able to capitalise on one of their chances.

“Football’s a funny game sometimes like that. You can have as many chances as you want but if they don’t go in it’s irrelevant,” said the Clarets goalscorer.

“The way we gave the goals away is disappointing but apart from the first 15-20 minutes I thought we played really well and created a lot of chances. But sometimes you have days when the ball doesn’t go into the back of the net.

“We were slow starters, that’s disappointing, but we’ll put it right.”
