SEAN Dyche has backed his strikers to come good, after it took goals from two defenders to earn the win at Bristol City.

Burnley have swelled their striker ranks over the summer to eight with the signings of Jelle Vossen, Chris Long, Rouwen Hennings and new club record buy Andre Gray, albeit with Ashley Barnes out long-term.

But so far Sam Vokes is the only forward off the mark this season – with the only goal to come from open play.

Defender Michael Keane, who headed in the decisive goal in the 2-1 win at Ashton Gate, is the leading scorer with three, left back Ben Mee got his first of the season on Saturday, while midfielder Matt Taylor’s free kick against Birmingham City completes the set.

But Dyche feels it is only a matter of time before they reap the benefits of such strength in depth up front.

“The good thing for us is it’s the early part of the season, we’re re-morphing the team into something different, we’ve got new players,” said the Burnley boss.

“The strikers haven’t took fire yet.

“It’s fair to say over a season they will, at some point, not necessarily fire as in millions of goals but they’re going to score.

“It’s great that they haven’t and we’ve still got good points on the board.

“You can’t be too greedy in this business, it takes time for a team to develop and we are.

“It’s the third time I’ve had to change a group since I’ve been here.

“The first season was after six or seven months, we got promoted that season and I had to try to do it last season to try to do something in the Premier League, now we’ve lost players I’ve got to change it again now.

“It’s very difficult to make it roll straight away.

“We’ve had to twist it and flex it, get used to each other, and it’s still happening now.”

Gray made his debut against the side who tried to sign him, and was given a typically hostile reception by the Bristol City fans.

“I thought the crowd were a little bit over the top but that can happen,” said Dyche.

“There’s no big drama over it, but I thought it was a little bit harsh because players have to make decisions about their careers.

“I think he’s made a good one in joining us.

“That’s nothing against Bristol City, who are a fine club.

“I thought he did fine.

“He’s had a very disrupted pre-season so he’s going to get fitter and he’ll get more used to our players.

“Overall he showed some sharp touches and nice movement and he’ll get used to how we work.”

Dyche is set to assess striker Lukas Jutkiewicz after the striker was injured soon after coming off the bench in the second half during the win at Ashton Gate, but carried on because Burnley had used all of their substitutions.

“We’ll find out over the next 24 hours,” said the Burnley boss.

“He soldiered on to make sure we got the result we wanted.”
