ROUWEN Hennings has welcomed the additional competition among the strikers with the arrival of record signing Andre Gray.

German targetman Hennings’ capture in an approximate £2 million deal from Bundesliga 2 side Karlsruher SC was followed by Gray’s £6 million move from Saturday’s opponents Brentford.

Signing after Friday’s noon cut-off point to be eligible to play, the 24-year-old had a watching brief in the Bob Lord Stand.

Hennings, on his full debut, started up front alongside Lukas Jutkiewicz, with both looking to stake a claim for their shirts, while their new team-mate – Burnley’s eighth striker – looked on.

But Hennings said the pressure for places was to be welcomed.

“I think the quality is much higher with a new player in the team,” he said.

“It’s good for us.

“We have a really long season and a lot of games and we need a lot of players.”

And Hennings was pleased to get off to a winning start, in his first appearance at Turf Moor, and believes he will get better as he adapts to a new country and new style of play.

“It’s new for me. I’ve only been here a week. I think in a few weeks I will learn every day.

“I know what the gaffer wants,” he said.

“It’s a little bit different. In Germany we play more with the midfield pressing and here, in my opinion, everyone presses. I have to learn that.

“In Germany we can run a little bit slower and then attack.

“Everything here is high intensity, but it’s OK.”

He added: “The first half was very intense but the second half we had good chances and we were the better team.

“It’s a good start for me. When the team wins it’s easier for me to play (up front).

“I hope in the next few weeks it will be the same as on Saturday.

“Everybody wants to play. Me too.”
