BEN Mee says doubling the club’s transfer record shows the Championship that Burnley mean business, after earning their first win of the season.

The Clarets got off the mark thanks to Michael Keane’s first-half header, allied to their first clean sheet of 2015/16.

Andre Gray, Burnley’s new £6million man has to wait for his debut, which is likely to come next week at Bristol City, the club he rejected ahead of his move to Turf Moor.

But Mee says his arrival is a statement of Burnley’s intent to get back up to the Premier League. “It’s good to see. The club is ambitious,” said the defender.

“We want to get back to where we were and give it another good go.

“That’s all that matters.

“It’s always a tightly contested league and it’s going to be competitive. We need to rise above it and do the best we can.”

And Mee believes their first win and shut-out gives them a platform to build on, after frustrations against Leeds, Birmingham and Ipswich.

“We’re happy with it. We know there are areas to improve but it was nice to get the win and keep a clean sheet,” said the defender.

The 25-year-old is operating in a new-look back four following the summer departures of right back Kieran Trippier and captain Jason Shackell.

Tendayi Darikwa and Keane have filled the gaps and Mee feels the transition is going well.

“The back four are gelling together and hopefully we can get a few more (shut-outs),” he said. “Keano played a lot last season and Tendayi’s come in and done really well for us.

“They’ve bedded in really well and we’re only going to get better with time.

“Duffo (Michael Duff) is still there and he’s playing well as always.

“It’s great to have him in there still and doing as well as he is.

“We’ve got a system that we’ve been using and the gaffer drums it into us.

“We need to get back to that and keep clean sheets like we did (on Saturday).

“Teams are going to come here and are going to want to take a scalp.

“We’re not the underdogs anymore, we know that. Teams are going to come here and take the game to us.

“I think it’s our status that’s changed and people’s attitudes towards us have changed a little bit.

“So far we’ve handled it well. Tuesday night (at Ipswich) wasn’t a good game for us but I think we handled Brentford well.

“We could have been two or 3-0 up in the end and even more comfortable.”

And Mee revealed he had a personal score to settle with matchwinner Keane, who scored his first Burnley goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Birmingham the previous weekend.

“We’ve got a little bit of a competition going,” Mee revealed.

“We’ve been doing a bit of work in training and he’s 2-0 up at the minute.

“I need to get back on track.”
