SCOTT Arfield has urged Burnley to go to Leeds United “all guns blazing” as the Clarets look to mount another promotion charge.

Fresh from a season in the Premier League, Sean Dyche’s side are expected to go straight back up.

But after going up as the surprise package in 2013/14, and having their top flight survival chances written off from the start last year, Arfield thinks the Clarets can cope with being the team everyone will want to beat when the season gets under way on Saturday.

“It’s going to be difficult, it always has been to get out of this league but we know exactly what it takes to get out of it, and we’re certainly one of the favourites to do so,” said the Scot, acknowledging that their new-found status as promotion favourites brings a pressure neither he or many of his team-mates have experienced at Turf Moor before.

“I think so,” he added.

“But the season before last when we got to Christmas-time and everyone was writing us off, there was pressure on us to stay there.

“Then last year there was almost no pressure, but we demanded from ourselves.

“That hasn’t changed.

“It’s a different mindset to the one we had two years ago.

“How we went up the season before, and then the experience we had last year, as soon as you have that it makes it extra special to get back there (to the Premier League).

“From day one of pre-season we’ve wanted to get back there as soon as possible.

“But I think the biggest pressure is what we put on ourselves to hit the standards that we believe we can hit.”

Arfield says their long-term target is to secure an immediate promotion.

But as with their ‘one game at a time’ mantra from two seasons ago, the midfielder feels setting short-term goals is essential if they want to succeed.

And he encouraged them to be on top of their game for the big kick-off, after being handed a tough start with a televised lunchtime game away to Leeds.

“We want to get back to it (the Premier League) as soon as possible, but it all starts with Leeds,” said Arfield.

“You need to beat what’s in front of you and it’s not going to be an easy task to do so.

“Elland Road is one of the toughest places and we need to start all guns blazing to get back there.”
