BLACKBURN-born midfielder Adam Barton has joined Portsmouth on a two-year deal, following his release from Coventry City.

The 24-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Preston to make more than 50 senior appearances for North End, said former Burnley midfielder and Accrington Stanley manager Paul Cook was key in his decision to join League Two Pompey.

“This is a massive club and the manager was also a big factor in why I wanted to come here,” said Barton.

“He’s won this league before and the way I like to play is the same way that he likes to play, so that’s another positive.

“I like to get the ball down and play it forward – I’m always disappointed if I give it away.

“The fans were another big reason why I wanted to join the club.”

He added: “Promotion has to be the aim.”

Barton, who made 30 appearances for League One Coventry last season, added he expects his new club to be pushing for promotion.
