BURNLEY have unveiled right back Matt Lowton as their first summer signing, on a three-year-deal from Aston Villa.

Just days after losing Kieran Trippier in a £3.5m deal to Tottenham Hotspur, the Clarets have acted quickly to boost their back four with a direct replacement.

Lowton underwent a successful medical with Burnley yesterday, and last night finalised terms at Turf Moor on a deal worth an initial £1million, possibly rising to £2m with add-ons.

The 26-year-old has been at Villa Park since his £3m sale from Sheffield United in the summer of 2012, going on to make more than 70 Premier League appearances.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche said: “Even back to his days at Sheffield United, I always thought Matt was a very good player and one who I think is motivated to go again.

“He has been at a big club in Aston Villa and wants to get back to the Premier League. The challenge for him now is to play regular first team football and help Burnley Football Club to get back there and we look forward to welcoming him into the group.”

The Chesterfield-born defender played in 44 league and cup games in his first season with Villa under former boss Paul Lambert.

Last season Lowton was limited to just 13 appearances after falling out of favour. But he has been offered a fresh start by Burnley, who are hoping Trippier will be their only departure from last season’s back four.

However, Derby are understood to remain in dialogue with the Clarets over centre half Jason Shackell.

Burnley have turned down a £2million offer for their captain, who has one year remaining on his contract and was an ever-present in their Premier League and promotion seasons.

Clarets boss Dyche last week said that, after Danny Ings’ move to Liverpool and Trippier’s switch to Spurs, he was not prepared to lose any other members of his squad.

“Everyone is under contract, in a way we’re in a different position than we were two and a half years ago, and there’ll be no point teams bidding for our players - it will be us that decides who goes out,” he said.

“It won’t be a case of clubs bidding and they just go.

“We’re too powerful now in the market.

“The only thing that will change is if I decide that changes.”

But the Rams seem resolute in their determination to secure a return for their former skipper and have not been put off by Dyche’s statement.

However, there are unlikely to be any developments before the clubs report back for pre-season training next week.
