ASHLEY Barnes was sent off as Burnley were beaten at Everton despite Tom Heaton’s penalty save.

Heaton saved Ross Barkley’s spot kick after only 10 minutes at Goodison Park but Kevin Mirallas found the net for the home side just before the half hour mark.

Barnes then received his marching orders for a second yellow card on the stroke of half time, while Mirallas escaped with only a booking after the interval for an awful tackle that saw him catch George Boyd on the shin with his studs.

Defeat saw Burnley drop to bottom of the Premier League table, with Leicester City beating Swansea City.

The match was open from the start, with Barkley dragging a shot wide after a strong run before the home side won a penalty in the 10th minute.

Aaron Lennon was able to run at the defence after an error from David Jones, and the recovering midfielder could only fell the Everton winger.

Replays showed that the foul had taken place just outside the box but it soon did not matter as Tom Heaton dived to his right to save the spot kick from Barkley, surprisingly taking the penalty instead of regular taker Leighton Baines.

Baines did have an effort on goal soon afterwards when his fierce drive was saved by Heaton, before Lennon fired narrowly off target after another dangerous run down the centre of the field.

But a goal was coming and Everton took the lead in the 29th minute when James McCarthy’s low right-wing cross evaded Kieran Trippier and Mirallas arrived at the far post to control and fire in from eight yards.

The Clarets should have equalised immediately as Jones directed his shot inches over the bar after being played in, but Sean Dyche’s men were reduced to 10 men a minute before the interval as Barnes was shown his second yellow card.

Barnes had been booked minutes earlier for a late challenge on McCarthy, and referee Mike Jones produced a second yellow after he lunged in on Seamus Coleman.

Burnley opted to play with a 4-3-2 formation in the second half but Arouna Kone almost made it 2-0 as his shot was blocked by a combination of goalkeeper and post.

Mirallas then escaped with only a yellow card after jumping into a challenge on George Boyd and catching the Burnley midfielder on the shin with his studs. It looked like a tackle that warranted a red.

Everton should have added a second goal when McCarthy side-footed an effort just wide from Lennon’s centre, before Heaton saved from Baines.

Gareth Barry also saw an effort saved from a Baines free kick but Burnley had a fine chance to level late on when Danny Ings sent a free header over the bar from Trippier’s cross.
