HAD you visited Jam on a Friday night as recently as six months ago, the place would have been dead. Perhaps, the few people that were there would have been wishing they were somewhere else.

Since then, layouts, lighting, DJs - you name it - have changed, and the result is that Jam has become the only pre-club venue to be seen on Glasgow's South Side.

The Night Moves team were down on Friday to have a look at the "new" Jam, and found it brimming (Jam packed, anyone? Didn't think so) with good-natured Southsiders imbibing cocktail after cocktail - in fact, since Jam's re-imagining, shares in Martini have risen 17%. (This may or may not be true.) Occupying a whole block - from Kilmarnock Road right through to Pollokshaws Road - it's bright, airy and minimalist décor creates an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. Not that you want relaxation on Friday nights though, so luckily DJ Joe Gullis was on hand to provide some funky house, laid back beats and the like for your delectation.

In an increasingly competitive South Side market, Jam occupies a commanding spot. It also sits nicely as a lazy-afternoon bar, with a new menu featuring such stomach-lining lovelies as gourmet burgers, steak sandwiches, rib stacks and a whole lot more.

One thing though - the atmosphere dissipates come 11pm - when 90% of the clientele depart in favour of the nearby Shed nightclub to carry the frolics into the wee hours. Despite that, Jam is a cut above its neighbours, and now has the potential to become the hippest party joint in Shawlands.
