AN armed robber has been jailed for six years after staging a knifepoint raid at a Glasgow off-sales.

Peter McConnell robbed female staff of 380 after vaulting a counter at the shop and putting a knife to the neck of one of the women.

At The High Court in Edinburgh, McConnell was jailed for four years for the crime but ordered he must first serve two years from a previous unexpired sentence for a similar offence.

Lord Emslie told him: "As you know this court has to take a serious view of armed robbery directed against small shops and the people who work in them."

McConnell, 41, was earlier found guilty assaulting of two women at a branch of G101 off sales at Rozelle Avenue, Drumchapel , and robbing them of cash on November 12 last year.

He threatened Irene Finnegan and Amanda Spence with a knife and demanded that they open cash registers.

McConnell, described as a prisoner in Glasgow's Barlinnie jail, had been released from an earlier jail sentence in 2003.

However, the court heard he was still under supervision.

Defence counsel Tom Ross said McConnell had been motivated to tackle his drug addiction.

But he added: "Unfortunately, he replaced that addiction with increasing alcohol consumption."

Lord Emslie ordered that McConnell should serve an extended sentence for a further four years, when he will again be supervised.

The judge said: "The main purpose is to protect the public but I hope it will also give you an opportunity to try to keep yourself out of serious trouble in future."
