MORE than 70 of Scotland's leading butchers and bakers will vie for the World Scotch Pie Championship title next week.

And two former West of Scotland winners are in the hunt.

And the only entrant from South of the Border is Northumberland-based baker Graeme Trotter from Seahouses.

It's the 10th year of the hugely-successful competition which has so far failed to find a winner from one of Scotland's major cities.

And the title has never gone outside Scotland.

Alan Stuart, the competition's founder and organiser, confirmed that there will be 74 Scotch Pie entries presented for judging on Tuesday November 4 at Carnegie College in Dunfermline.

Seven of the eight past winners are in the frame including current champion Amos Smith of W F Stark, Buckhaven, Fife.

This year 46 entries have been received from butchers and 31 from bakers, a major shift from previous years.

Mr Stuart of Stuart's of Buckhaven said: "This is the first time that the entry from butchers has beaten the bakers.

"As in previous years, the judging will be in secret by a panel including experts from the butchery and bakery industry.

"No results will be published until after the awards lunch on Thursday, November 27."
