DON'T leave it any later, alligator - tell us about your Community Champions today.

There's only one week left to nominate community heroes in the East End for the Glasgow Community Champion Awards. PLEA TO THE WEST IS the west best when it comes to outstanding community work?

We're also seeking nominations of community heroes in the west area of Glasgow.

Tell us about individuals, groups, charities and companies making a difference in Yoker, Scotstoun, Knightswood, Temple, Anniesland, Blairdardie and Drumchapel.

These are the areas the awards will be focusing on after next month's launch in the East End.

The second of our 10 community awards ceremonies across Glasgow will be at Drumchapel Community Centre on December 2.

If you know of a group or individual doing outstanding work in these neighbourhoods, let us know by completing an entry form before the deadline of November 6.

If you know of any remarkable groups, individuals, charities or companies making a difference to lives around Shettleston, Greater Easterhouse and Baillieston fill out an entry form today. You can even nominate yourself or your own group.

We're also looking for nominations of teams and workers in the public service sector who go above and beyond the call of duty.

The campaign is a partnership between Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and the Evening Times.

Lord Provost Bob Winter said: "Every single nomination shows that every community has people working selflessly to make life better for their neighbours.

"The awards recognise their efforts and show how much we have to be proud of in our great city."

Over the past few weeks, we've highlighted examples of people committed to changing our communities, including Gladigator and the Gladiator Programme, which introduces youngsters to physical and healthy activities and sport.

But we also want to find out about the unsung heroes, whose efforts go unnoticed.

It could be a health team improving lives, a teenager who has raised a fortune for charity, a residents' association, or even a friendly neighbour who can be relied upon for so much more than a cup of sugar.

There are six categories of nominations: individual, team, neighbour, young person, public service individual and public service team.

Three nominees from each category will be shortlisted for the awards ceremony at The Bridge arts and leisure complex in Easterhouse on November 17.

The event is the first of 10 across the city. The public are invited to attend the events to meet representatives of the awards partners.

All 60 local winners will be invited to a gala dinner at the City Chambers next September, when the overall Community Champions will be crowned. THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION CATEGORIES

INDIVIDUAL AWARD We want to hear inspirational stories of people who give up their free time to make a significant contribution to other people's lives or to a local community. This could be someone running a sports club, campaigning for better services, tackling health issues or committed to cleaning up their area.

YOUNG COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS It's never too early to become a Community Champion. We're looking to find people aged 17-years-old and younger who have shown inspirational behaviour, perhaps through incredible fund-raising or acts of bravery. Nominations for young groups and individuals are welcome, and can include voluntary youth groups, uniformed organisations, community groups and schools.

PUBLIC SERVICES TEAM AWARD A remarkable public service team that has made an outstanding contribution to help those they serve. This team working in any public sector will have gone that extra mile to provide help and support, making a real difference to the lives of others.

PUBLIC SERVICES INDIVIDUAL AWARD This award will be presented to individuals working for a public service within a community who have gone beyond the call of duty. It could be a teacher, social worker, housing officer, doctor, nurse or emergency services officer.

TEAM AWARD The team award recognises the life-enhancing work of community teams, organisations, charities or a group of volunteers. For example, this category is for any group involved in fundraising, organising community events or making the community a better place to live.

NEIGHBOUR AWARD Everybody needs good neighbours, but perhaps you know a community star who regularly goes out of their way to help others? We're looking to recognise those unsung heroes who make a big contribution to local communities with no expectation of personal gain. HOW TO TAKE PART
