BURNLEY were unable to build on last week’s win over Manchester City as they were beaten at Southampton this afternoon.

The Clarets were denied on three occasions by substitute goalkeeper Kelvin Davis in the first half but Shane Long put Southampton ahead before a Jason Shackell own goal put the game beyond Sean Dyche’s side.

Southampton lost keeper Fraser Forster to injury after only 14 minutes, with the England international stretchered off after his knee appeared to buckle as he tried to kick the ball downfield before he then collided with Sam Vokes.

The Saints brought on Kelvin Davis for his first appearance of the season as a replacement and the 38-year-old soon had to make an important stop to deny Vokes, who fired too close to the keeper after collecting a lay-off from strike partner Danny Ings.

George Boyd then had a penalty appeal turned down as he went down under Jose Fonte’s challenge while the Clarets were in the ascendancy.

But Southampton were ahead in the 37th minute when right back Nathaniel Clyne saw his angled shot deflect off Ashley Barnes and across the face of goal, allowing Long to fire home from six yards at the far post.

It was almost 2-0 when Graziano Pelle somehow managed to fire against the bar from six yards after Fonte had headed across goal, but seconds later Burnley went close themselves as Davis again made a superb stop to keep out an effort from Ings.

A frantic end to the first half then saw Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton do well to tip Steven Davis’ header over the bar, before Southampton stopper Kelvin Davis was again at the centre of the action as he thwarted a Vokes header.

Steven Davis hit a volley into the side-netting for the hosts early in the second half before Long’s 25-yard effort went just wide of the post.

Southampton made it 2-0 in the 58th minute when raiding left back Ryan Bertrand fired over a fierce cross and Shackell stuck out a knee and inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net.

Pelle then saw a header saved as Southampton sought a third goal.

Shackell headed over from Trippier’s free kick for Burnley, but in truth the Clarets never really looked like getting back into the game.
