A SCRAMBLED own goal consigned Burnley to a damaging home defeat against Swansea City this afternoon.

The Clarets are in the middle of a daunting run of fixtures and needed a result to move them out of the relegation zone, but Kieran Trippier and Tom Heaton combined to turn the ball into their own net in the 64th minute.

Heaton had brilliantly tipped Jack Cork’s effort on to the bar, but Cork then turned the ball back across goal and the goalkeeper appeared to make the telling final touch after initially stopping Trippier from diverting the ball into his own goal.

Burnley named an unchanged line-up from the side that drew 1-1 at Chelsea last weekend and there were huge cheers for Ashley Barnes when his name was announced before kick-off.

The Clarets started brightly and the first real chance fell to Barnes when Danny Ings caused problems for the Swansea defence and his strike partner then saw a close range shot saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

Swansea quickly had a chance of their own when Jonjo Shelvey released Wayne Routledge, who lobbed the ball just wide.

Referee Jon Moss waved away appeals for a penalty, with Routledge claiming that Heaton had fouled him after the ball had gone.

Heaton saved a low 20-yard effort from Bafetimbi Gomis before the striker had another chance five minutes before the interval as he latched on to a Shelvey pass but fired over left footed.

The Clarets had an appeal for a penalty turned down early in the second half when the ball struck Federico Fernandez’s arm after Michael Kightly’s surge into the box.

Barnes then smartly hooked a shot just wide but Swansea broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with some help from the Burnley defence.

Gomis headed a right-wing corner across goal and Heaton then made a stunning save to turn a close range effort from former Clarets midfielder Cork on to the bar.

But Trippier then turned the ball back towards his own goal, with Heaton stopping it on the line before fumbling it into the net.

In the final 10 minutes Fabianski saved Barnes’ curling effort from outside the box, before substitute Sam Vokes was also denied with a close range shot at the near post.

But the Clarets could not find an equaliser and succumbed to a disappointing defeat.
