That means it is the Reds who will progress to the quarter-finals, and a home meeting with Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United.

The Clarets were semi-finalists in this competition two years ago, when they were beaten by local rivals Blackburn Rovers over two legs, but they will be unable to reach that stage this time around.

Having seen off AFC Wimbledon in the third round, Terry Pashley and Andy Farrell named an unchanged side from the one which beat Cardiff City 3-1 at Turf Moor just seven days ago to secure this last-16 tie.

On 18 minutes Clarets goalkeeper Tony Aghayere was forced into his first save, making a smart stop from Tyler Walker’s right-footed snapshot inside the 18-yard box.

The hosts made the breakthrough just before the half hour, with Oliver Burke firing home from close range after the Clarets had failed to clear Jack Kelly’s corner.

Burnley almost found an immediate equaliser when Ntumba Massanka’s effort was blocked in the box by Ryan Yates after good work by Bradley Jackson.

Forest’s goal seemed to wake the Clarets up, with Andy Nugent next to go close as he blazed a shot wide.

The final chance of the first half saw Jackson tee-up Andreas Bianga, but his curling effort was saved by Tim Erlandsson in the Forest goal.

Aghayere was the first goalkeeper to be called into action in the second half, saving after Gerry McDonagh’s turn and shot, before having to repeat the trick to save from Walker three minutes later.

On 66 minutes the hosts doubled the advantage when Walker finished after a long ball over the top.

The Clarets keeper was forced into another smart save shortly after, keeping out Burke’s effort.

Aghayere then saved from Walker in the closing stages as Burnley bowed out.
