MARTIN Dobson was the last player to be capped by England while playing for Burnley - but he thinks that record has a chance of ending this season.

Danny Ings has scored seven Premier League goals in his last 14 league appearances, as well as four in seven Under-21 games, and Dobson believes the striker stands a chance of getting a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s senior squad.

England are next in action against Lithuania and Italy in March, before taking on the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia in June.

With Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck assured of places in Hodgson’s squad, Ings’ main competition comes from former Burnley team-mate Charlie Austin, Spurs striker Harry Kane and West Brom’s Saidho Berahino.

None of the four have been capped by their country yet and Dobson, whose last Three Lions appearance came while he was at Turf Moor, believes Ings could force his way into the reckoning.

“I think he’s got a great chance, he’s doing very well and he deserves everything he gets,” said Dobson, whose last England appearance was in a 2-2 draw with Yugoslavia in June 1974.

“He’s a young player whose performances over the last two years has been exceptional. He’s shown he can score goals at the top level which is very, very difficult for a striker to do.

“He’s got three in his last four games, and his goals this season have come for a team that’s been at the other end of the table, a bit like Charlie Austin “The strikers playing for the bigger clubs will usually get more chances, as those teams are expected to create lots of chances.

“Teams towards the bottom don’t get as many chances, yet he is scoring goals for fun.”

Dobson, who made 494 appearances for the Clarets and currently works at Leicester City, believes Ings’ form for Gareth Southgate’s Under-21 side will also have ensured he is in Hodgson’s mind.

“He is on the radar,” said Dobson. “He’s played and scored goals for the under-21s and he is scoring goals in the Premier League.

“There is competition with Charlie, Harry Kane and Saido Berahino, but it is healthy competition.”
