ASHLEY Barnes’ goal moved Burnley out of the relegation zone with victory over Southampton after Tom Heaton saved Dusan Tadic’s penalty.

Heaton dived to his left to deny Tadic on the hour mark, and 13 minutes later Barnes’ effort beat Fraser Forster at the near post to give the Clarets victory.

The result moved Burnley above Hull and QPR and up to 17th in the Premier League table.

Sean Dyche’s men made a bright start to the game and Danny Ings came close to an early goal as he surged forward and fired a low 20-yard effort just wide of the post.

Southampton keeper Forster then had to save from his own defender Nathaniel Clyne as the full back turned Kieran Trippier’s cross towards his own goal.

The visitors lost full debutant Jake Hesketh to injury, with replacement James Ward-Prowse forcing a save from Heaton with a 25-yard shot before the interval.

Burnley’s early momentum had petered out and a lifeless match was only revived on the hour mark when Southampton won a penalty.

George Boyd tripped the advancing left back Ryan Bertrand but Heaton dived low to his left to turn Tadic’s penalty around the post.

Southampton had previously converted 29 successive spot kicks.

The visitors pressed forward but Ings then saw a shot saved by Forster before Burnley took the lead in the 73rd minute.

Ings charged down a clearance from Clyne and it played in Barnes, whose shot took a slight deflection off Toby Alderweireld before beating Forster at the near post.

Clyne’s powerful 25-yard shot just evaded the far post as Southampton searched in vain for an equaliser, with Victor Wanyama also heading over from a good position late on.
