BURNLEY moved out of the Premier League relegation zone after drawing at home to Newcastle United tonight.

Papiss Cisse’s equaliser cancelled out George Boyd’s opener for the Clarets.

But with QPR losing at Swansea City and Hull City not in action until tomorrow, the result was enough to move Burnley up to 17th in the table.

Danny Ings forced a save from former Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Rob Elliot early on as Burnley produced an impressive first-half performance.

Tom Heaton had to deny Mehdi Abeid at the other end but soon afterwards Boyd gave the Clarets a 33rd-minute lead as he collected the ball from Ings’ knockdown and fired a left-footed effort past Elliot.

Burnley almost made it 2-0 before half time as David Jones fired narrowly off target, but Newcastle made two changes at the interval and were back on level terms just three minutes into the second period.

The Clarets were unable to clear a cross and Cisse was on hand to turn in from close range.

Burnley then saw Stephen Ward stretchered off and his replacement Ben Mee headed wide in the final minutes.
