Tom Heaton - 9
Most of Sunderland’s efforts were comfortable for him but his fingertip save from Van Aanholt was outstanding.
Kieran Trippier - 7
Defended well enough but again not at his best going forward, with a couple of disappointing crosses.
Michael Duff - 7
Involved in a physical battle with Connor Wickham, winning his fair share of duels against Sunderland’s big target man.
Jason Shackell - 8
Excellent positional awareness to be in the right place to clear Giaccherini’s cross and defended well throughout.
Ben Mee - 7
Not much of an influence going forward but solid at the back and stood up to Johnson well when he was on his flank.
Scott Arfield - 6
Struggled to make much of an impact on the game compared to his performances so far this season.
Dean Marney - 7
A solid presence in the middle and he did what he provides every game, sensible use of the ball and a good screen.
David Jones - 7
Got forward well at times but he should have done better with his first half shot which was straight at Mannone.
George Boyd - 7
Again showed some very neat touches with his left foot, but became a peripheral figure as the game wore on.
Marvin Sordell - 5
Missed a glorious chance early on and never really recovered after that, withdrawn after an hour.
Lukas Jutkiewicz - 9
Still without a goal but another excellent display, giving Wes Brown and John O’Shea a very tough afternoon.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Lukas Jutkiewicz
Looks full of confidence at the moment and his hold-up play was superb, bringing others into the game. Could easily have won another penalty. Just needs a goal.
