Andy Lochhead: Silly fees are pricing out Burnley

Angel Di Maria

Angel Di Maria

First published in Sport by

THIRTY years ago I said money would kill the game, when the wages rocketed up. I thought it can’t go on, but it still is!

I don’t think it’s good for the game.

It’s certainly not good for the smaller clubs like Burnley, with significantly smaller budgets, when it comes to trying to compete.

It is likely there will be a £60million man on show at Turf Moor on Saturday, with Angel di Maria expected to make his Manchester United debut after completing his move from Real Madrid earlier this week.

It is mega money. A different world, and one that Burnley will never get close to financially.

It’s a nonsense, and it’s the fans that suffer because they’re the ones who are ultimately paying for it with inflated ticket prices and merchandise and the rest of it. But as a player, this is where you want to be, playing against the best.

George Best, pictured, was probably THE best opponent I ever faced.

Speaking from experience, there is no need to fear these world class stars.

Instead, it should encourage you to puff your chest out, raise your game and get on with it. Show folk what you’re made of.

That’s how I used to look at it. You want to be an equal.

In the first two games the Clarets have been guilty of showing teams too much respect, certainly in the first halves, but hopefully they have learned from that and they can start well against United and pile even more misery on the Red Devils.

As for Di Maria, I would not fancy the pressure that comes with a British record price tag.

There is no time to bed in, you have got to go out and do the business, much like Louis van Gaal was expected to.

That hasn’t happened, so there is even more attention on Di Maria to provide the answers straight away.

Fingers crossed he does not succeed, and one of the current Clarets can have a Robbie Blake moment.

Nobody is expecting Burnley to go out and spend £60 million on one player Andy.

I think one or two were maybe expecting Burnley to spend more than £4 million out of the £120 million on new players, however, that is a decision the Burnley board have made.

There's no point complaining about how much other clubs are spending when Burnley are getting £120 million just for being in the division and have decided to spend a mere fraction of it.

And less talk of inflated ticket prices too. How much is it at the Turf these days?

l think we have put our trust in Sean and the board.
Yes, we've had some setbacks in the transfer market, but to get a player to fit into our structure is more difficult than with some other clubs.
That's just our policy, a player that Sean identifies has to fit in at every level, his fee, his wage, his character etc. and l agree with this.
Team spirit and bonding got us here in the first place and we dont want it destroyed by a couple of bad signings.
So yes, at the moment the knockers can slag us off, but we can only be judged at the end of the season.

Well said Dublin. Seems to me the main whingers of our transfer activity are bstrd fans and you wonder when that club will next pay a fee for a player? There's no 'market' if one club is paying 150 grand a week wages and another 15. Andy's right, our players will step up to the plate and take them on. If they fail then that's how it is, we can't pay 5 let alone 50 million for a winger. Anyone would think the fans are distraught. The game is a sell out, the Calrets can't wait. Then we're seeing clubs who gambled the family silver playing in half empty grounds. Clubs like Blackburn who were paying ridiculous wages last year, and the year before and guess what? They'll be paying them again this. Did they get promoted - no. Will they - no. And did Burnley rip away the only cuddle bunny the bstrds have left because they were paid three times as much? Not on your life. So a message to bstrd fans - wind your necks in their's a gale heading your way and your gummy little faces will have any remaining teeth pulled out by the force of the storm. And for Clarets - ignore the doom-mongers, listen to the professionals, to the people who know the game. I read an online preview yesterday that gave us no chance against Man U - it was written by a 15 year old boy living in Sunderland. That's the sort of dross we have to put up with. It comes with the success - he didn't write one for rovers. Funny that, it's like nobody gives a toss about them. And that's what really hurts.

They let you out after a week did they? Still they’re overcrowded these days these psychiatric wards. I just wonder how they didn’t section you.
He thinks he's been away but all that happened was the left side of hid shrunken alcohol damaged brain convinced the right side not to pull ot that pathetic well past even predictable username. So after shouting the usual anti-Burnley bile until the meds kick in it will be off to bed to recover by biting the ears off his cuddly Bertie Bee. Well as this just happens to be my specific line of work, I can tell in an instant who is on meds and I would guess it's Chlorazine but personally I'd recommend to your CPN they tried you on Risperdal.

And you've been away a week, have you? Since you've NEVER written one single word on here that relates in any way to an objective truth, we'd only accept that to humour you. Of course, your attempt at a name change this morning was as laughable as the psychiatric service in BwD at this sad time.

Yup that's exactly what last season was, embarrassing. Embarrassing for every belligerent Rovers fan like you out there and here you are again with constant dribble and swipes at anything claret and blue. Blackburn must really be in a bad place if you're spending all of your free time researching and ranting on Burnley forums. Maybe if you were a real fan and joined in supporting your own team, then maybe the realisaion that Burnley are the number one club in Lancashire again wouldn't effect you as much.
I see Rovers are signing a premier league player and we can't even land one from the championship, now thats embarrassing.

Cheers the peoples champion, i refuse to bury my head in the sand and get soft flanneled by a board intent on ripping us off, and dumping us back in the championship. Do they honestly think if we go straight back down that Vokes, ings, arfield and Trippier will hang around. If we don't sign more decent players they will all want to leave come Christmas, including Dyche. All we need is three more decent players to give us a chance of finishing just out of the bottom three, just three players WTF is going on?

They let you out after a week did they? Still they’re overcrowded these days these psychiatric wards. I just wonder how they didn’t section you.
He thinks he's been away but all that happened was the left side of hid shrunken alcohol damaged brain convinced the right side not to pull ot that pathetic well past even predictable username. So after shouting the usual anti-Burnley bile until the meds kick in it will be off to bed to recover by biting the ears off his cuddly Bertie Bee. Friday treat is wearing his replica Burnley shorts and getting super excited running around his flat. Quite a funny old loser really.
Re-read that first sentence and ask yourself who sounds like he's on meds. Quite understandable I guess now the reality check of your impending season has finally landed between your numb lugs.

Thumbs up, eh Barry?

Yup that's exactly what last season was, embarrassing. Embarrassing for every belligerent Rovers fan like you out there and here you are again with constant dribble and swipes at anything claret and blue. Blackburn must really be in a bad place if you're spending all of your free time researching and ranting on Burnley forums. Maybe if you were a real fan and joined in supporting your own team, then maybe the realisaion that Burnley are the number one club in Lancashire again wouldn't effect you as much.
I see Rovers are signing a premier league player and we can't even land one from the championship, now thats embarrassing.
I like you. You are the only Dingle that posts on a B*rnley discussion forum the truth - you shoot from the lip - you show no mercy and take no prisoners - yet you are hounded by a pitch fork wielding, torch carrying mob.

You simply speak the truth.
Shhhhhh.....Shhhhhhh
h......there there, pet. I know it's tough. I have a bit of time for true B*rnley fans like you. I admire your honesty. It is brutal - but the truth can be.

The players you listed were, lets face it, one season Pot Noodle Wonders. THEY'LL BE OFF....INGS CLEARLY DOESN'T WANT TO PLAY FOR YOU. He's no interest and i believe that maybe Bruce or Rovers might snap him up. I think he'd want to move to a bigger club.

Hike the ticket prices, fleece the synthetic glory hunters (genuine fans like you locked out and alienated), trouser the proceeds (it's happened before), lose an ambitious manager and drop through the divisions faster than a bucket of sh!t China.

I can see Dyche walking before Christmas.

It'll be embarrassing again at Turd Morgue tomorrow. When i watched B*rnley out played, out thought, out passed and out classed by Chelsea all i could hear were 4,000 Londoners echoing around their corrugated medieval ground... it just reverberated. It'll be the same tomorrow with 4,000 United in the Away End and a further 1-2,000 seated around the rest of the 'ground'. Live on national TV. How humiliating. Can't wait.

Here we go again - do you lot really get sexual stimulation from your ailing club's signings and team performance? Hopefully over the next few years we may well see benefits to society from your continual rejections by Championship squad players and poorly managed flutter with the Premier League.
