Dyer: Clarets have got what it takes

NATHAN Dyer scored the goal which condemned Burnley to back-to-back defeats, but believes they have got what it takes to survive.

It was with the Clarets that the Swansea winger made his full Football League debut as a 17-year-old in November 2005.

It was on his 100th Premier League appearance on Saturday that his first goal of the season proved enough to beat them at the Liberty Stadium.

But Dyer has backed his old club to bounce back from a difficult start, including an opening day defeat to Chelsea.

“Burnley were my team when I was 17 and I’ve got a lot of love for them. Hopefully they can do well. They’ve got good players but it’s always hard when you first come up,” he said.

“We got beat (4-0) against Manchester City in our first game.

“It’s going to be a hard year but I’m sure they can stay up.

“They came up before and went back down but I’m sure they’ve got a bit more ammunition this time and they know what it’s like to play in the Premier League, so I’m sure they can stay up.”

Dyer sees Danny Ings as a key man for the Clarets.

“He’s a very good player. As much as they can give him the ball and get him in the right areas he’ll score goals. He looks confident and secure,” said the 26-year-old, who of his time at Turf Moor, added: “I’ll always be massively grateful for the opportunity.

"The first (full) league game I played was for Burnley and I’m grateful that they gave me the chance. They helped me come through as a footballer so I’ll always have gratitude for them.

“One of the boys, Michael Duff was there when I was there so I’m pleased to see him and hopefully they can do well.”

Who to believe? Here we have yet another pro plying his trade in the top tier of English football. His boss was the same - last week it was international defenders saying how much of a handful our forwards are. Their boss, winner of titles and trophies alike - was equally generous in his praise. Yet can we believe them? What about all the Blackburn fans, the non-professional, non athletes, who can't manage a household budget without a handout - should we not listen to them? Bit of a conundrum. Do we go with those who know or those who snipe, the bitter haters - our blue and white pals? I like Dyer, a real professional, think I might just go with him on this one.

Lad based in Australia. Used to live in the UK. About 12 hrs ahead? About quarter to 10 at night his time, he goes on the comment column and makes a practical contribution to the Rovers' articles(s).

Err, no. He goes on the Burnley column and has a dig. Doesn't say much about the varsity of the article. But it tells you a whole load about him

I think you're wrong on this one Cert. What you seem to forget is that the Rovers who come on here support a much bigger club than Burnley. A club that is just biding it's time before it's inevitable return to where they belong. I mean to say, everything about the Ewood set up oozes premier league doesn't it? They have apparently got another 10k fans just waiting for the return of prem football to Ewood (the fact that they are not there currently doesn't matter, does it?). And how can you possibly put the judgement of some idiot like Mourinho ahead of say, Oz Rover? Anyone who lives in a country where football is played on a cricket pitch and has TWO sets of rugby posts at each end for goals must be listened to before the likes of pro footballers who spend every day eating and breathing the game. We must also accept that when Rovers come on here posting their pearls of wisdom they do so out of a deep affection for their neighbours who they look upon as a sort of poorer cousin.
Remember, Cert, that we have a lot to learn from our bigger and better neighbours. We can, for example, learn how to manage a football club financially, or how to pick top class managers. We could learn how to spend 18 years of broken prem membership (don't mention the 24 years "unbroken" membership of the top flight that we had as that would be disrespectful).
Know your place Cert, you shouldn't doubt the depth of knowledge that our Rovers friends have with regard to football.
They're pretty good on raising chickens as well.

Wrong on all counts. First we're 9 hours ahead not 12 and i'm born and bred in Australia though i've visited the the UK (up north) on 4 occasions and will be visiting again early next year to see the mighty Rovers at Ewood. We're also 9 hours ahead not 12 and i often post in the Rovers section when i feel the need to.

Don't whinge about Blackburn fans posting in here because there's every bit as many Dingles posting in our section if not many more, especially when we get done. Tells you a whole load about them eh?........

Another one with no idea. Every A-League plays on their designated rectangular shaped home pitches and not cricket ovals. The team i support plays at AAMI Park and it's 1000 times better than that dilapidated crap hole that is Turf Moore. Google it and you'll see what i mean.

You're going by when Victory played Liverpool here at the MCG last year and the only reason why it was played there is because it's the only place in Australia that would fit everyone in. Besides, the 95k people there didn't seem to mind.

Now then Oz, I am always willing to stand corrected but I watch Aussie rules whenever I can (I particularly like Hawthorn, does that make me a trophy hunter?) and I am always led to believe that it is played on an oval pitch. So I just thought I'd check it out on good old Google and found this:
Australian rules football grounds, even at the highest level of the game, have no fixed dimensions. For senior football, the playing field is an oval, typically between 135–185 metres long goal-to-goal and 110–155 metres wide wing-to-wing.
Now I could be wrong but doesn't that knina vindicate my previous post somewhat.?

Sorry to disappoint mate but I've been following Blackburn since 1987, well before the Premiership title. If I was a trophy hunter like you're suggesting it'd make a hell of a lot more sense if I followed Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal like the majority of Aussies do who follow football here wouldn't it? Why would I be following a team currently in the Championship and come across the other side of the world to see them play? Can't wait to get back to Ewood in March/April.

Of course most people over here have heard of Blackburn because we've been in the Prem much more often than as opposed to say Burnley so it's obvious everyone knows them, it's your mob they have trouble distinguishing. That's not taking the pi*s either it's just the way it is.

As for the Aussie rules I'm a Collingwood fan myself (who happen to play Hawthorn this week) and as I mentioned in my previous post, yes the big football games that are played here like Liverpool, Socceroos friendlies etc are played on ovals but like I said that's only because our rectangular pitches don't have the capacity for such big games. Otherwise week to week the A League games are played on their own rectanguLar pitches.

Oz Rover

Feel free to run a simple IP address check and you'll see exactly where my location is. Besides, why the in the hell would I come on here and 'impersonate' being a Rovers fan and from Australia of all places? Lol

An impersonator would come on here and pretend that he's a Burnley fan and stir up crap that way, geddit???? Unfortunately both your club and mine have one or two of these numpties so we're even there. I can't see the point in it personally and to me it's just plain stupid but each to their own.

I'm a proud Rovers fan and would never dream pretend to be a fan of another side, especially Burnley and I would expect the same from you lot.

But it tells you a whole load about him
Wrong on all counts.

Just a thought. If you are a genuine Aussie what the heck are you doing supporting Rovers? I thought most people over there wouldn't have even heard of Blackburn, let alone support a football club from there. It didn't spring from some time around the early to mid nineties by any chance did it? They seemed to spawn a whole new breed of "fan" around that time that had something to do with a bloke called Walker.

Bet you're looking forward to this weekend's game then, I've seen some classics between those two on tv. Still puzzled by the oval argument though. I seem to think all the games I see are on ovals and the Google argument kinda backs me up. Mind you, most of the games I see are on the big grounds (with excellent attendances as well), so I bow to your wisdom on that one.
As for not being a trophy hunter, if you have supported Rovers since the eighties then you probably started at the level where they are now I guess. I think though you will find that we have been a top flight side more than Rovers in the modern era, 24 years unbroken is something never rivalled by Rovers (modern era being post war).
