Willie Irvine: Clarets defender Trippier has England potential

IF Jay Rodriguez does complete a transfer to Tottenham, it will be a wonderful move for him.

I’m so pleased for him because since he left Burnley he’s never forgotten where he comes from, he always remembers the town.

He was a great player for the club and it was a shame when he left, but it was because of the financial situation of the club at the time.

I think he’s got more improvement left in him and if this move happens he’ll soon be wearing the Three Lions again.

Kieran Trippier has spoken about his England ambitions this week and I think he can join Jay in the squad.

Now that Burnley have been promoted to the Premier League, if he keeps performing as he has done he will get the chance to show everyone what he can do.

I don’t think Roy Hodgson is fully confident in the full backs he has at the moment and there’s no doubt Kieran is a good talent who will keep getting better.

He crosses really well, he very rarely puts a bad ball into the box and sometimes he plays almost like a winger.

It would be great for Burnley if they could have an England international at the club. It’s been a while since that has happened, since the days of Martin Dobson, Brian Miller and John Angus.

Burnley’s new keeper Matt Gilks has said he is keen to keep his place in the Scotland squad but he will have a really difficult task dislodging Tom Heaton as the club's number one.

Tom had a brilliant season last year, starting every game, and ever since I came to Burnley in 1959 the club have always had good keepers.

Matt might have to be patient and wait to see if Tom has a loss of form.

Everyone is saying they can’t wait for August 18 against Chelsea when the Special One comes to Turf Moor and I agree, I’m really looking forward to that first game now.

I think Burnley will be better prepared this time than they were under Owen Coyle last time. I’m not sure we were ready for it then.

I know we started brilliantly and I can still picture that Robbie Blake goal against Manchester United now, but from very early on I did think we were probably going to be relegated unfortunately.

This time we conceded a lot less goals in our promotion season and Sean Dyche really seems to have everyone so well prepared, so I think we can do better now.

I am glad Sean is our manager.

I think I'm right in saying Martin Dobson won 4 caps for England whilst at Burnley. He is the last player to be receive a full England cap whilst at Burnley. Fingers crossed for Tripps.
