McClaren: I thought we'd lost Bryson to Burnley

This Is Lancashire: Steve McClaren Steve McClaren

DERBY County boss Steve McClaren has admitted he was as surprised as anyone to keep hold of Burnley target Craig Bryson.

The goalscoring midfielder was expected to be added to the Clarets squad ahead of their Premier League season.

But, despite holding talks after Burnley triggered a £750,000 clause in his contract, the 27-year-old had a dramatic change of heart and signed a new five-year deal with the Rams.

"We thought we had lost Craig Bryson. I didn't think we would keep hold of him,” said McClaren.

"The first day he came back for pre-season training it seemed as though we had lost him but everybody in the dressing room has worked hard on him, we have all worked hard on him, and in the end Sam Rush (chief executive) and Chris Evans (head of football operations) have got it over the line and he stays.

MORE TOP STORIES:

"What a great boost. It is like a new signing.

"Craig Bryson wants to play in the Premier League - everybody wants to play in the Premier League," said McClaren.

"Burnley have gone up. They did very well last season and they saw value in Craig Bryson.

"There was one or two little things over a clause in his contract but we are delighted it never actually came to that.

"He is one of the first names on the team sheet and the thought of losing a damn good player wasn’t a good one, so it is pleasing to have him signed up."

No. It was the proximity of Blackburn. All the footballing world know of your endless sense of entitlement and putrid arrogance. The stench of this wafts over here on the prevailing westerly wind. He got a niff and that was the end of that.

Good luck to Derby next season, he's a fine player and has done pretty well out of this with a big pay rise and a 5-year contract. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have offered more than 2 or 3 years on similar money.

Interestingly, he will now be part of an excellent Derby side going all out for promotion to the Premier League this season and you just know he will pile on the misery for the no-dad's.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

Derby, Fulham, Norwich, Cardiff, Reading, Wigan, Watford, Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Brighton, Bolton, Leeds.... it's going to be a tough league next season that's for sure.

Derby just could not afford or him to leave for £750k (which obviously was the clause in his contract) when he is worth £3m+ so they give him a bumper contract and if Derby arn't pushing for promtion, or don't get promted next season, they can sell him for a realistic price.

Do you think the no-dads might be caught mid stroke when they realise that it only make Derby stronger? A top ten finish might just be too much for them!

You have got to be worried for Derby if the players they attract (Bryson, Thorne from WBA) prefere to play in the Chumpionship against teams like Blackburn when they could play in the Premier against Man City and Chelsea.

These players obviously want an easy ride - not the type Dyche wants.

Lucky escape for Burnley I say.:)

Yes but the fools will think those are good odds -,most Blackburn fans think FFP doesn't apply to their club and this season only championship clubs in massive debt are due a 25 point Christmas bonus. And Bryson wouldn't make their bench had he's never lifted European silverware. He'd actually risk promotion directly into the champions league where they think they should be. They're massive don't you know? Legends in their own minds.

Pretty desperate response from a burnley fan, he is quality and you were being tight by only paying £750k. Haven't you just been promoted and got a £120 million windfall ?
Face facts when it came down to the crunch he felt Derby had better prospects than you guys !
You robbed us last year with Martin getting sent off and us having the goal disallowed ! Having said that you hammered us early on in the season.
You need at least 5 good signings and they won't come cheap and believe you me getting beat every week like we did in the premier is not fun !
You need to turn your home ground into a fortress but first you need to fill it !
It looks like your chairman is already budgeting for life back in the championship !
You were very lucky with injuries last season but these things seem to have a habit of turning around !
The in fighting between the two sets of fans on here is pathetic !
Grown up Debate it is not !
Good luck guys !
Think dyche is a good manager in the championship but so was billy Davies ! Premier league is a duffernt animal !

Dyche delivered automatic promotion after spending £400k. How much has Billy Davies spent?

Burnley beat Derby home and away, scoring 5 and conceding 0.

Burnley went up, Derby weren't good enough.

Everything Dyche has done so far has been immense. He has recently committed to the club and will be given time and money to take Burnley FC to the next level.

Can he do it? We'll find out, one thing is certain though, I'd rather be heading into the Premier League with Sean Dyche as manager than Billy Davies.

I have pointed out why Derby had to keep him, perhaps the promise of letting him go at the end of the season was enough to convince him, together with the new signing on fee, wage increase, loyalty bonus and the selling bonus he will get next summer.

Think you have missed my point ,
Davies was a good manager in the championship but rubbish in the premier!
Dyche ????? Who knows
The problem you guys are going to have is attracting quality players especially if you are not willing to spend money or paying the going rates !
How many players has turned you down so far ?
Probably a lot more than has been published !
MacLaren has had a Great season with us and hopefully we will go up next season and join you in the premier league !
I heard Bryson changed his mind as he was concerned about the lack of other major signings and only a 3 year deal on the table !

What you need is a big name signing which would make people think you are serious and therefore attract others !
At the moment they see average ground , steeped in history but poorly supported ! Your away following had always been good but for some reason at home you struggle !

The Leeds, sheff wed , derby , forest , sheff utd, wolves and others are much bigger clubs than yours and you will need more than Sean dyches personality to attract players !

Why would we offer to pay more than his buy out clause? That doesn't make sense!
.
P10 W8 D2 ~ we have been "hammering" you for years!
.
I have pointed out why Derby had to keep him, perhaps the promise of letting him go at the end of the season was enough to convince him, together with the new signing on fee, wage increase, loyalty bonus and the selling bonus he will get next summer.
Yes we've had a bad run but before that you didn't beat us for 7/8 games,
Here's a stat 9600, did you really get that for a home game last season against Birmingham ?
Shocking !
Also we've sold over 20000 season tickets for next season in the championship !
You've sold , erm, 13500 ! Poor
You've got to turn your place into a fortress ?
Not likely with the above numbers !
It's a good job you did go up automatic as if you had made Wembley not sure how you would have sold 40000 plus!
In maclaren and Bryson we trust !!!!!!!

Hi Garry,
think you've got me wrong,
everyone in Derby hates Billy Davies with a passion.
We also feel Burnley were trying to pull a fast one on Bryson when they didn't need to (due to £120 million).
We didn't go up and it adds insult to injury if you guys come along and try and get something for nothing.
Sean D looks like a decent guy but who knows what he will do in the prem?
You guys should have offered what Bryson was worth and he would have gone!
We didn't buy last time we went up and ended up with Earnshaw, Claude Davis and Andy Todd., Robbie Savage and Kenny Miller.
All rubbish (apart from Robbie towards the end).
Lets hope you get more than the 11 points we got!

Come on. We are a town of 70,000 people you cannot compare is to a City with 250,000 people! Our capaciy is 22,000 of whch 4,500 is for away supporters, yet we still outperform a big club like yourselves.

When we were last at Wembley we sold all our tickets and won! Once again Derby not quite matching our performanc on the field. a bit like your last vsit to the Premier league,do you still have the record for the worst performance in the PL?

Good luck next season, you will need it to finish in the playoffs.

There's a 70s feel to fans of Derby, Forest and Leeds. It's like they're waiting for normal service to be resumed and all conveniently forget how long the clubs they sneer at spent above them. Freeze frame fans locked in their own fairy takes. Hey mate - you didn't go up. Get over it
