DAVID Jones insists there will still be no talk of promotion in the Clarets camp, despite his first league goal helping to fire Burnley five points clear in second place.

The midfielder’s wonder strike – a dipping volley over ex-Claret Lee Grant – put Sean Dyche’s side in the driving seat over third placed Derby County.

Dean Marney added the finishing touch to a 2-0 win which signalled a full calendar year without a league defeat at Turf Moor.

“We know that if we're on our game it’s going to be a difficult game for anybody,” said Jones.

“I don’t think anybody in the league really wants to come here. It doesn’t guarantee you anything but it sure puts you on the front foot,” said the former Wigan man.

But Jones stressed the Clarets would be taking nothing for granted in the Premier League push.

“Not at all. There are a lot of good teams behind us.

“I know it’s a cliche but we’ve just got to look to the next game.

“The manager’s reinforced that throughout the season, and the staff. We don’t get ahead of ourselves and I think that’s one of the things that have contributed to such a good season so far and keeps us hungry. We’re just looking for the next game, and that’s all we’re going to do.

“The type of guy the manager is he doesn’t get ahead of himself.

“The club isn’t built like that, it doesn’t feel like that.”

Nevertheless, Jones was pleased to play his part in strengthening Burnley’s position in the top two.

“I’ve hit the bar and the post so it was nice for it to go in. When I saw it hit the bar I did fear it was going to bounce out but luckily it went in,” he said.

“I was due one and really happy to get on the scoresheet, but it was all about the result today.

“It was a big game and one that we wanted to play well in and get a good result to back up last week (against Nottingham Forest) and that’s what we did.

“You always want to get in front. Derby have got some dangerous players. We knew it was going to be tough but we just feel at home if we get in front we’re a difficult team to beat.

“Although they went down to 10 men we managed to get the second goal and get through the game and get three points.”
