SOME things are just made for each other aren’t they? Bacon and eggs, strawberries and cream, Starsky and Hutch and, of course, Batman and Robin are a few examples of quintessential combinations.

Well after Saturday’s 3-3 thriller down at Loftus Road I think we can safely add the names of Ings and Vokes to that classic list after scoring all our goals between them.

As supporters we are not party to the insider dealings that go on between manager and chairmen but you could almost hear the collective sigh of relief from Clarets’ fans as the transfer deadline clock ticked down on Friday night with our first-choice players still intact.

And if proof were needed that our front two have made the right decision to continue their partnership, it was there for all to see against QPR as they turned in their most consummate performance of the season as a pairing.

It was a game that traversed the full gamut of emotions. From early despair when QPR’s new signing Kevin Doyle scored after only seven minutes, to deep joy when Burnley had grabbed the lead at 3-2 with a trio of well-crafted goals, and finally reserved satisfaction at taking a point from our promotion rivals. Although deep down we knew it could have been all threes.

Uncharacteristically the two tightest defences in the division both had ‘switch off’ moments to make it an exciting contest for the watching Sky TV audience.

A week ago tonight before our 0-0 draw against Brighton at Turf Moor there was a minute’s applause to honour the recently deceased Arthur Bellamy – a Burnley stalwart in every sense who went from rolling balls to rolling pitches all in the Claret cause.

I met Arthur and his wife, Maureen, on the journey down to London for the funeral of my boyhood hero, Ralphy Coates. Although suffering from a debilitating illness, Arthur maintained his cheery disposition.

Along with Ralph, Arthur, Brian Miller, Harry Thomson and, of course, Harry Potts, they were all names written proudly on my school exercise books.

Our next four games are against teams that we took just a point each from in the reverse fixtures.

Although the circumstances of those matches made them well-earned returns, a 50 per cent improvement on that tally when we play Millwall, Bolton, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest would keep us at the business end of proceedings going into the last two months of what so far has been an exhilarating season.

And now that we have retained the services of our own superheroes in Danny and Sam, the future’s bright, the future is Claret.
