IN terms of league position, the present Burnley team are better off at this stage than their history-making counterparts.

While the current team sit third after 26 games, the promotion-winning team were in fifth place after the same amount of games, eight points off the automatic promotion places.

Despite the prolific form of Danny Ings and Sam Vokes, who have 35 goals between them, the current Burnley side have scored one goals less than the 2009 team after 26 games – 39 compared to 40.

But the current team are considerably more solid at the back, conceding just 20 goals as opposed to 35.

Burnley’s top scorer in the promotion season was Martin Paterson, who was the only player to hit double figures in the league with 12 goals.

However, goals were shared around the team and vital contributions came from the likes of Graham Alexander (9), Robbie Blake (8), Chris Eagles (7) and Chris McCann (6).

On the other hand, while Ings (15) and Vokes (12) have ensured Burnley have a more potent strikeforce than in 2009, only five other Clarets players have scored in the league this season and Scott Arfield (4) is the only player to score more than once.

The Clarets are unbeaten at home this season, having taken 29 points from a possible 39 and conceded just eight goals.

After 26 games of the promotion season, Burnley’s home form was also impressive, with only two defeats.

The promotion winners’ away form was distinctly mixed at this stage, with five wins, three draws and five defeats.

The current team is stronger in that department, with six wins and only three defeats.
