CLARETS reporter Suzanne Geldard looks at the promotion team of 2008/09 and the current Burnley side. Who would get into the starting line-up if both squads were combined?
BRIAN JENSEN
Tom Heaton is having a fantastic first campaign with the Clarets, but the Beast had the season of his life in 08/09.
KIERAN TRIPPIER
If there is a better right back in the division I have yet to see him. Offers so much to attack and defence.
STEVEN CALDWELL
A tough call over Jason Shackell but the former captain led by example on and off the pitch. Kept Clarets focused and kept believing.
MICHAEL DUFF
Last man standing from promotion-winning side. Burnley’s longest serving player is still going strong.
BEN MEE
Fellow left back Christian Kalvenes scored a vital goal in the promotion push, but Mee is more consistent.
GRAHAM ALEXANDER
The ultimate professional, and ultimate penalty taker. A vital cog in the promotion wheel.
WADE ELLIOTT
Impossible to leave out the Wembley winner. Always inventive out wide or off the front.
DEAN MARNEY
An unsung hero of last season and this. Clarets missed him in midfield engine room while injured.
ROBBIE BLAKE
Those ‘Bad Beat Bob’ pants proved a lucky charm, and the mercurial talent undid many a defence.
DANNY INGS
Could fire Burnley into the Premier League by becoming the club’s new record goalscorer this season.
SAM VOKES
Bringing the best out in Danny Ings, and vice versa. Cannot be separated. Has made for a good old-fashioned strike partnership and long may that continue.
