BURNLEY manager Sean Dyche said he is not setting his players a points target in the hunt for promotion, because he doesn't want to put a ceiling on what they can achieve this season.

The Clarets have averaged two points per game, after hitting the 50-point mark at Yeovil last weekend – their 25th game of the Championship season.

Second placed Burnley will look to go into next week’s blank weekend in the strongest possible position when they take on in-form Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow.

But Dyche says he will not set down a total of what he feels they will need to achieve an automatic promotion or play-off place.

“It’s only a personal opinion but I think you can limit yourself if you do that,” he said.

“I’ve never understood strikers, for example, saying ‘I want to get 20 goals a season’. Why would you limit yourself?

“I don’t limit this group as to what they can achieve.

“I’ve made it quite clear, you can achieve what you want to, and it’s about how much you’re willing to put into it to get that achievement.

“We’ve been very open-minded and very flexible with the group.”

Burnley are a point clear of QPR in third and have an 11-point advantage over sixth-placed Brighton, but Dyche said: “It’s about accumulating points but not about gaps, not about play-off positions.

“That’s our focus and that’s always been our focus, going every game to win and then reflecting afterwards on what you’ve got and how you can learn for the next one.

“It’s just about continuing that winning mentality, building on it, building on performance levels.

“I see the table but I don’t read too much into it because it can change radically.

“The main thing you’re looking to work towards is consistency of performances.

“If you can get that more often than not you’ll get the outcome you want, and that’s what we’ve been really good at this season as a group.

“We’ve looked at the games, we’ve gone hard in the games and we’ve come out and looked back at it, de-briefed it and got ready for the next one.

“That’s been one of our ways of working this season, we’ve found it’s appropriate for the group and we’ve enjoyed that.

“Rather than overthinking it we keep going and keep driving on to the next game.”
