BURNLEY manager Sean Dyche is hopeful of making Ashley Barnes his first cash signing, after confirming the striker was having a medical with the Clarets.

A fee, believed to be around £750,000 plus add-ons, was agreed with Brighton last night, with the 24-year-old travelling up to East Lancashire for talks today.

Dyche was hoping the deal would go through tonight, or at least in time for Saturday's game at Yeovil, despite Leeds United making a rival push for the front man.

"Something was agreed between the clubs and he's in having a medical with us," said the Burnley boss.

"It's one that we've been working on for a while now.

"The agreement between the clubs came late last night."

Of the prospect of having Barnes in the ranks for the weekend's Championship clash, Dyche said: "Possibly, it depends on all the boxes being ticked with the medical and financial side, but that's active as we speak. We're hopeful there's at least a chance of that.

"We're possibly looking towards the end of business today, depending on if we can align things appropriately. We're getting there."
