IT’S well known that games are won on the training ground, as was proved on Saturday.

A move out of the textbook from a corner kick left Danny Ings free to drive home his 17th goal of the season for Burnley, in a derby game against Blackpool which at times was end-to-end and entertaining.

Danny’s confidence has been sky high since his England Under 21 call-up, and he was unlucky not to come away with the matchball on Saturday.

But we can’t ask for much more than what he’s delivering for us this season. His first touch is excellent, not to mention his scoring ratio.

It makes me wonder, and worry, if the watching scouts are going to get the club chequebooks out in the January transfer window.

The club have said they have no wish to sell, and just as crucially there is no need to, so I hope we can hold on to him because I think there are a lot more goals to come from Danny.

We didn’t have it all our own way on Saturday. For starters the referee’s decision making was woeful, leading me to believe even more that some officials just like to be the centre of attention.

How he never pulled out at least one red card I’ll never know.

On top of that their manager’s son, Tom Ince, was a danger all game, but fortunately for us his team-mates didn’t get the ball to him often enough and Scott Arfield settled it with a goal of the season contender.

I remember playing against Blackpool when Stanley Matthews was in his pomp.

Alex Elder was our left back and had instructions to follow Matthews wherever he went.

Alex was only a young lad at the time and he took on those orders to the letter, to the point where, when Matthews had enough of him breathing down his neck and started to go up the tunnel, which was in the middle of the Bob Lord Stand at the time, would you believe Alex followed him!

It’s a true story, and it took him a while to live it down, but Alex saw the funny side eventually. He was only doing as he was told.

There will be a few ones to watch for Middlesbrough in today’s Boxing Day fixture, but Burnley have enough confidence in their own game and ability to go there with the aim of staying on top of the Championship.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and here is to more wins.
