Arfield delight as Turf aces top Christmas table

This Is Lancashire: Danny Ings scores for the Clarets Danny Ings scores for the Clarets

SCOTT Arfield declared the derby win that fired Burnley back to the top of the Championship for Christmas their biggest of the season.

The Scot struck a wonder goal early in the second half to give the Clarets a 2-1 win and move them back above Queens Park Rangers, who lost 1-0 at home to Leicester.

Burnley drew 1-1 at Leicester seven days earlier.

Arfield (pictured right) said: “It’s our biggest three points so far. It was fantastic. The QPR result goes to show what a fantastic result it was to get that point at Leicester.

“It’s brilliant to be back at the top of the league again.

“Every games a carrot to get the three points and see what happens at the end of it. Those three points put us at the top of the league and it’s a great feeling.”pool and ensure the Clarets maintained their unbeaten home record in the league, after QPR had lost theirs in the lunchtime kick-off.

A 1-0 loss at Loftus Road to third placed Leicester meant Burnley would reclaim first place if they could beat Blackpool.

After Danny Ings' opener was cancelled out by Craig Cathcart before half-time, Arfield curled in his fifth of the season to settle this entertaining Lancashire derby.

"It was a fantastic start to the half," said the attacking midfielder.

"I think we played ever so well in the first 20 minutes of the first half and could have had a couple of goals by then.

"Blackpool eventually started coming back into the game - with the players they've got they're going to do so.

"I know Stephen Dobbie from Scotland connections and he's fantastic at picking up pockets, and Tom Ince is a fantastic player, with Steven Davies up front. You know it's going to be hard and it's up to us to do what we could do, and thankfully we got the win.

"It's our biggest three points so far.

"It was fantastic.

"And the QPR result goes to show what a fantastic result it was to get that point at Leicester.

"It was brilliant to be back at the top of the league again.

"Every games a carrot to get the three points and see what happens at the end of it.

"Those three points put us at the top of the league and it's a great feeling."

Teams who have been top of the Championship at Christmas for the last five seasons have gone on to win promotion.

But Arfield insists there has been no talk of that at Turf Moor.

"Certainly not.

"It's a tough league and when you're up there you deserve to be up there and I think we thoroughly deserve it.

"It (the result) could take on more significance at the end of the season and hopefully it does but we have to take it game by game and see what happens," said Arfield, who ranked his winner as one of the best goals of his career.

"It's right up there to be fair, with the meaning of the goal - in a derby and putting us back on the top of the league.

"It was more a team performance and in the last 20 minutes we had to dig right in there and show what we're all about."

I wonder if the FA will let you go up now then?
Its like boxing day sales come early at Burnley for anyone looking through the windows you can get Trippier, Arfield, Vokes and Ings for the same price as one jordan Rhodes, its like a bargain bucket from the Kentucky
I wonder how many this well run club will cash in on, its getting exciting now.

Arfield really does now deserve a Scotland call up - another who should get his chance with England is Ince - Blackpool have a gem in that player and easilky warrants a place in Englands starting line up - just because he plays for Blackpool and is in the championship is the only reason he is not in the fuull squad!

Spent your Giro on bubble again have you, you inbred bag rat.
Still looking up at the Clarets and crying, you shoeless retard?

I find it hilarious how much misery our success is causing you. I really couldn't possibly have done a better job at destroying you than the Venky's have. It truly is a joy to watch "once proud" but now a laughingstock Blackburn Rovers slide further and further into obscurity. Your relegation was immense, but I feel the best is yet to come.

Makes my day when I see this Scrooge revealing his wish-list to the public in the hope his misery will infect those he would like to see catch it.

So let's see how your recent 'predictions' are going, shall we, sir?

Last Friday, you were claiming Burnley would draw and you also predicted that Burnley would never top the league again. Saturday, Burnley won and went to the top of the league! You haven't got ONE SINGLE PREDICTION correct EVER so you predicting a 'slow motion train wreck' is virtually a guarantee of promotion. Thanks for your unsolicited endorsement there, sir; we cherish your petty-minded hatreds all going against you. Must be bad karma from a previous life's howlers.

Did I tell you that my karma ran over my dogma?

Anyway, have a Merry Lidl Christmas, sir. You deserve it for the many hours you've spent attempting to summit Mt. Misery this (and every other) year.

Good to see fake Bristols is predicting we at least make the play offs and has been doing for some time. Should almost guarantee promotion.
I refuse to get carried away ever since we were top under Stan and running away with it only to win something like 1 in 8 at home and eventually finish 7th. Don't expect this to happen this time and not being pessimistic either, just being grounded.
Great to be top at Christmas though and an amazing feat so far by all concerned. Sure they are determined to give it everything now the chance is there
Merry Xmas to all Clarets and all other sensible football fans.

That season under Stan we missed out on the final play-off place on goal difference having one less than Norwich. If anyone deserved a shot at the pay-off's it was Stan. I think we are a completely difference prospect under Dyche however and I said I would start to believe if we made it to the Christmas period within touching distance of an automatic spot. We are clear at the top and have a winnable run of games coming up. Dare to dream?
