Burnley goalkeeper Heaton targets more clean sheets

This Is Lancashire: Tom Heaton Tom Heaton

GOALKEEPER Tom Heaton has praised a team effort for setting him up for personal best clean sheet tally.

The Clarets have recorded 11 shut-outs in league and cup this season, 10 of them with Heaton in goal.

That return has already equalled a season-best for the former Manchester United stopper, for Rochdale and Wycombe combined in 2009/10 when he was sent on loan from Old Trafford in the 2009/10 season.

And he would love the chance to surpass that total in Burnley’s top of the table clash at Leicester City on Saturday.

“There’s a massive amount of excitement already building up for that.

“Top of the table clashes are the ones you want to play in as players and we go into it full of confidence, happy with how we’re playing.

“We’ve got some great performances behind us, a great win on Saturday, so we’ll have no fear.

“If we stick to the things we’ve done well then we’re going to give ourselves a fantastic chance of winning the game.”

Leaders Burnley boast the second meanest defence in the Championship, supplemented by being joint third in the leading goalscoring charts.

After reaching double figures for clean sheets with the 1-0 win over Barnsley at the weekend, Heaton said.

“Ten’s my best for a full season, and we’re only halfway there.

“I’m a small factor in that.

“As a team we have that framework and solidity that makes it hard to play against.

“On Saturday in the first half they (Barnsley) had the better of the game but they had one chance.

“If you’re keeping teams down to one or two chances a game you’re going to give yourself a chance of keeping clean sheets and not conceding many goals.”

He added: “We’ve got eight clean sheets in the league, (11) in total.

“It’s a fantastic return and there’s a bit of pride there for me, as with the rest of the team because everyone’s involved in it.

“I’m enjoying it at the minute.

“Hopefully it can continue.”

Absolutely!!! Heaton has been consistent this season. One or two errors but what goalkeeper doesn't drop a howler from time to time. All in all though, it's difficult to criticise anyone this season. A clean sheet on Saturday would be nice, even if we don't score, a point would be good, especially with the cameras there: we're not at our best with the TV present. Leicester are not in the best of form at the moment (he said too soon) but the camera situation worries me.
The good thing about this season is-----well, just about everything really I suppose.
We are in good shape financially.
We have enough room between us and the chasing pack to be able to sustain a poor run if needs be.
A top manager who knows what he is doing and doesn't spout rubbish.
No apparent need to sell anyone at the moment (according to the board).
In good shape for the FFP (a ridiculous thing in my opinion, geared to make the rich richer).
A bunch of players who would run through walls for the club.
A club that at the moment is fit to be proud of, by the way it's run, the way it's managed on the pitch and with an atmosphere (despite the claims of an idiot reporter) that is usually terrific.
A truly blessed thing to be a Claret at the moment!!

Sustain a poor run houseclaret! I thought we had just been through one. Time to get back to another winning run. ..I say optimistically.
Tom Heaton is proving a great part of a winning squad.

Heaton has a great pedigree. Lost his way in the period before Bristol City stint, but carved a great reputation out for himself playing with a poor Robins' team last season. That takes some doing. Man Utd used to say that he was one for long term hen with them, but they grew impatient. I think the Clarets are going to truly benefit. Great keeper.

I knew someone would pick up on that. After I read it I thought it wasn't worded correctly. I meant another from here. Our recent, much publicised run of "poor form" included a draw away to Millwall (a tough place to go anytime), a draw away to Forest, a defeat away to Huddersfield (at 2-1 it wasn't the worst result we've ever had) and a draw (albeit a little disappointing) at home to Watford (who aren't the worst team in the championship by a long way). The only truly bad result really was the draw at home to Bournemouth. A 5 game run of "bad form" that includes only one defeat away to a very good side isn't that bad really I suppose.
I sincerely hope that we do get back on track but away to Leicester in front of the cameras I will take a draw and celebrate.

At least we have sheets unlike you lot who have holes in the ground. Now run along little boy and put a bet on a score draw on Saturday especially if DJ Gamble is playing.
