Vokes defiant on Burnley 'mini-slump'

This Is Lancashire: Sam Vokes Sam Vokes

STRIKER Sam Vokes says he has no problem with outsiders calling Burnley’s run a “mini slump”.

Given that the Clarets remain just a point off top spot despite going five league games without a win the Wales international deems it a compliment based on their impressive start.

But he admits the reaction – an over-reaction in Burnley's view – is an incentive to start winning again.

“It seems a bit drastic (calling the run a ‘mini slump’) but we’ve earned it because people have got that respect for us that they think we’re going to go out and roll over teams every week,” said Vokes, ahead of tomorrow’s home game with Barnsley.

“It’s a very tough league.

“High expectations are there which is to our own merit I suppose because of how we performed at the start of the season.

“Clubs are giving us that respect when we play them to almost sit in and hold. It’s up to us to break them down.

“Now we’ve earned the right to be up there and now a lot of teams and a lot of people have got more respect for us.

“We’ve earned that ourselves.

"I think at the start it maybe surprised a few people but now we’re further in the season people have seen the quality we’ve got.

“We’ve got something to prove and we can hold our own up there.

“We’ve proved we can be at that end of the table and hopefully we can carry on.

“We’ve had a great start to the season. Up to a few games ago we were flying.

“We’ve picked up a few I suppose indifferent results in the last few games but we’ve still been putting in the performances that are worthy of the win.

“But we need to go out and earn those wins and I’m sure they will come if we keep performing the way we have been.”

Ever-present Vokes was without strike partner Danny Ings for the first time this season on Tuesday, as the top scorer missed the visit of Watford because of an ankle injury.

It was Burnley’s first goalless draw since facing Middlesbrough at home in February last season, ironically a game that Ings was also absent for.

Vokes said he missed is scoring sidekick, with who he has developed a seemingly telepathic connection this season.

“I told him to get fit for Saturday,” said Vokes.

“It’s been a partnership that has worked well this year.

“We’ve been proud of it and it’s something we want to keep going.”

But he has backed Burnley to get back among the goals even if Ings is ruled out through injury again.

“There are other options. Our wide boys have chipped in with a few this year and Scott (Arfield) has scored some very important goals,” said Vokes.

“There’s a lot of cover in the team.”

Vokes played the lone striker role in midweek, with Arfield working just off him.

“Scott did well on Tuesday night. He’s got an abundance of energy, he’s a good workhorse. He’ll do the defensive duties and get up in support of me. I thought it worked well the other night.”

“As a striker you’ve always got pressure to score goals and it’s a pressure that I like.

“You want to have that,” said the 24-year-old Welsh international.

“Ingsy’s obviously proved himself this year, that he’s got the goals and he’s been a fantastic striker.

“Whoever plays wants to go out and do the job.

“You always want to get on the scoresheet and three points would be invaluable at this stage of the season.”

Ings is hopeful of overcoming his ankle knock in time for tomorrow’s game.

Mini slump? They've run out of steam, as predicted. They will continue to slip and miss out on the play offs now.

Good for Vokesy.

Shows what a great team spirit we have - one that's missing from so many teams in this division.

Teams that think they have a God-given right to success, firstly through the money they burnt and then overspent and secondly because they were cocky about it.

As with Owen Coyle this week, what goes around comes around.

Excellent, honest teams that live within their budget will overcome! UTC!!

Blackburn Fan in peace - Just as a general post - your start to the season has been unbelievable given the size of your squad. You remind me of when we won the league, we had two average-good wingers in wilcox and ripley, but they did the basics right in that they beat a man, got to the byline and put crosses in for what was then the best strike partnership in the league in shearer and sutton. For me, you boys do the same. Attack at pace, and supplying a relentless batch of crosses into the opposition area will ultimately result in goals eventually. Dave Jones in the middle resembles an old Mark Atkins - at times overlooked but does the basics very well and if im being honest, a player we are desperately missing.

So congratulations on the run you're having. It is deserved, but as the games comes thick and fast and injuries and suspensions mount up I will be interested to see if you can sustain a play off place. That will be the true test of SD's credentials. Dont envisage you having any problems on Saturday though!!!

Thanks for this. It makes a refreshing change to the "our club's bigger than yours, we have more support, you have six fingers and my dad's bigger than yours" type of posts we normally get. You are absolutely correct and we Burnley fans realise this. If I'm being honest we are probably as shocked as the rest of the nation but long may it continue. If we don't lose anyone and we can strengthen who knows? Whatever happens we have to be at least a good bet for the play-offs. I believe (and hope) that the board see the bigger picture if anyone does come a'knocking for our players. Whatever offer they make would pale into insignificance compared to the money to be made in the premiere league if we can get there (and, hey, we have before with, in my opinion, an inferior squad). We have had a blip but if we don't get 3 points on Saturday (no disrespect to Barnsley) then we don't deserve promotion. The good thing about Tuesday was that although we slipped to third we are now nearer the top than before due to Leicester's loss. A win on Saturday and either of the others losing and we are back in the top 2 due to our goal difference.
Never thought I'd say it but, for obvious reasons, I wish Rovers all the best for Saturday, a win for them would do us no-end of good.

The prediction business eh? "They've run out of steam, as predicted". Well, you wise Owl you. You solid person who knows stuff. Just one flaw. You didn't predict Burnley top of the table for 9 weeks, and then 1 point off the top after "they'd run out of steam" Run out of steam? 1 defeat in the last five, the very period you say is the "run out of team" period. Rovers can only dream of such a "run out of team period".

You a predicter? Don't give up the day job!

You don't have to "big yourselves up" when you are top of the league, as we were for 9 weeks. To do that we'd be aspiring to a position higher than that, and there isn't one available. And you can't be deluded of something being the case, when it actually is.

Apart from every element of the whole of what you say being numpty nonsense, then you're spot on!

Hey bob, newsflash, you were top until you started playing the top half. Its called biggin yerselves up and being deluded. I warned you. And now you can't buy a win. Vokes, credit to him, has tried to tell you the same. Pity it isn't sinking in.
Open your mind to your new found reality. It will screw you up if you fight it.

Oh dear. Your original point so easily overturned. Now back for more with an an attempt at a changed track of argument. Sadly though the point still misses the slow-study that is the poster FakeVilla. Playing teams in the top half of the table do include QPR, Reading, Derby County, Leeds United and, oh yes, Blackburn Rovers. Not a defeat amongst them. And playing or not playing top half teams is bigging yourself up, its simply playing top half teams - that's all it is. Go on, have another go.
