Willie Irvine's Clarets column: Referees must own up to errors

This Is Lancashire: Sean Dyche Sean Dyche

IT is about time someone questioned referees on how they can see things.

The game at Huddersfield made me wonder. On the way home all 3,600 away supporters felt that Burnley had been robbed, and we had.

The goals were not the fault of the payers but shocking decisions by the officials. Surely we should have an assessor in the stands and we can get them back to the schools?

They should be taken into a room to explain some of the decisions they give. When they are on the pitch they are too quick to pull out cards.

I think it is something that can be brought into the game. We do not hear from referees enough. They should also be able to explain to footballers why they are making certain decisions and communicate with them.

I remember playing for Burnley reserves against Stoke City and I had a shot that hit the post and went in.

I was celebrating a goal and the referee, Jack Taylor, pointed for a goal kick. He didn’t book me but I took him over and showed him there was a hole in the net.

He was very apologetic but that was too little too late. It was a good job it was only a reserve match and he refereed in the World Cup final.

I think it is about time the officials explained themselves after a match.

I know we didn’t turn up for the first hour and I did say last week to watch Oliver Norwood. He opened the scoring and I thought Tom Heaton could have done better but he has kept us in some games so he is allowed one little slip.

We have been top for a while and it was on the cards that defeat was.

I am sure Sean Dyche will have spoken to his squad about the importance of getting back to the top and hopefully by Saturday night we will be on top of the pile again.

Yawn Sunlight, moonlight, good times, blame it on the boogie, or the ref if that doesn't work. Grow some, this is the same ref for other teams as well.

Referees usually react to the crowd a bit and, as there wasn't one at Burnley, he just took a wild stab.
10900 in a clash with two promotion chasing sides, PATHETIC, the clubs should have been deducted points

What a load of rubbish! Referees have always made mistakes. They are only human. It has always been a part of the game. It is very unfair on the referees these days because there are so many cameras watching all the play. It's very well complaining after the match when shown on TV but the referee has to make an instant decision. Any way, usually they will even themselves out over the season. No doubt this season Burnley (and other teams) ahve been given "wrong" decisions in their favour. Just get on with it. I started watching football in the mid 1940's and we always blamed the referee when we got beat.
