TERRY Pashley said Burnley only had themselves to blame for slipping to their heaviest defeat of the season at Cardiff.
The Clarets caretaker gave credit to the league leaders for cruising to a comfortable win in South Wales.
But the 55-year-old felt Burnley made it too easy for the Bluebirds to extend their 100 per cent start from seven home games.
“Some of it was self inflicted,” said Pashley. The first one we gave possession away up the pitch and never really recovered from that.
“The second one, we picked the wrong options for what to do with the ball and got punished.
“But after the first goal, it was a tough afternoon for us.
“We tried to be a little bit more positive in the second half. At 2-0 we felt if we can get the next one, at 2-1 it would have been game on. But 3-0, as it went, gave us a mountain to climb.”
After kicking off his caretaker spell with a win and a clean sheet against Blackpool, Burnley left it late to secure their first back-to-back league wins at Bristol City last Tuesday, after surrendering a 3-1 lead.
Pashley felt poor refereeing decisions contributed to the goals against at Ashton Gate but he knew Burnley had been the architects of their own downfall at Cardiff “The three goals we conceded the other night were different to those conceded against Cardiff,” he said.
“On Tuesday I considered it to be refereeing decisions that went against us, but these were in open play.
“We didn’t have chance to regroup before we were punished.
“If we do want to compete at the top end of the Championship we have got to play on a consistent basis, churn out good performances day in, day out.”
And Pashley used Cardiff as an example of what can be achieved.
“It’s no fluke why they are at the top of the league,” he added.
“They are playing some consistently good football and they are a tough team to play against.
“We can’t come off at the end of the game with excuses. People are responsible for their performances. We all have to be accountable.”
