Cambridge complete double success

CAMBRIDGE Harriers enjoyed two victories at the opening Kent League fixture of the season at New Barn Park in Swanley.

Sabrina Sinha-Coe led from start to finish in the U13 girls’ race to win by 25 seconds.

“I was really looking forward to the race,” admitted Sinha-Coe.

“I wasn't sure if I would be tired from running another cross country race on the Thursday, which was the first round of the English Schools cup at Beths School.

“But from the start I just enjoyed the running and it felt very comfortable.

“I think I led it from the start after the usual push and shove at the start.

“It was really good to run with the other girls from Cambridge Harriers, who all ran well.”

The next Cambridge Harrier to finish was Megan Marchant in seventh place.

Yael Sherr, who was making her debut, was 37th and Siobhan Samuel 45th as the Eltham-based club finished fourth with 45 points.

The second victory of the day came from Dean Lacy in the senior men’s race.

Despite going off course briefly Lacy won from his close rival over the last few years, Micael Coleman of Medway and Maidstone.

Lacy said: “I was following Michael when I heard a shout from behind. I shouted at Mike who was still running.

“ I turned round to get back on course and jogged so he could catch up because I wanted it to be a fair race between us.”

Once Coleman caught up both athletes worked their way back through to the front of the field.

It wasn't long before Lacy put in a kick and gained a few metres on his rival.

The gap grew over the next to two laps and the Cambridge Harrier eventually won by 26 seconds.

He was followed home by 800m runner Joe Durrant.

Finally over his injury problems from the summer, Durrant started off slowly and picked up the pace over each lap to finish 10th.

Mark Penny (31st), Lauris Rackicki (53rd), Clem Dixon (63rd) and Graham Maynard (82nd) completeing the half dozen to score team who finished fifth on the day.

Other finishers where Alex Hall (116th), Martin Hawkins (130th), Pat Austin (165th) and Mark Newell.
