ROSSENDALE Harriers enjoyed a successful 2009 on the track, fell, road and country – and even on the bike with Roy Flanagan picked for the Great Britain Duathlon Team at the World Age Group Championships.

Back in the summer, the club’s senior track and field team topped Northern League Division 3WC after winning their last three fixtures.

Phil Taylor and Geoff Fielding won medals in the veteran classes of the English Fell Championships, while Ashley Holt was co-winner of the Rossendale Midweek Series of three fell races and won the Pendleton and Brown Wardle Races.

Davina Raidy triumphed in the Yorkshireman Off-Road Marathon and on the tarmac Andy Buttery and Jon Ferguson were the only East Lancashire athletes to break 2hrs 40mins in the London Marathon.

Despite all that success, the Harriers still focused on the juniors when they staged their presentation night in Rawtenstall. Joe Johnston and Sarah Yeomans were the Athletes of the Year, while Johnston and Ashley Kay received international call-ups.

Johnston made his England debut for the U16 boys’ team at fell running’s Home International, while Kay won his second England vest at the World Youth Challenge.

Two of his club mates became English Junior Uphill champions – U10 Beatrice Toman and U12 Megan Solomon.

The club honoured the U11 girls with the Team of the Year award, but the U13 girls, U20 men, senior women and senior men were all top of the heap too.

Johnston and Kay were individual winners in the U17s and U20s.

For the women, Emma Flanagan and Megan Davies won in the U20 and the U15.
