Roadrunners have the look of champions

ATHLETICS: Burnden Roadrunners women’s squad launched the defence of their Central Lancashire Grand Prix title in impressive fashion when they won the ladies team and ladies vets categories at Sunday’s Lostock 6 road race.

The team consisted of Izzy Hughes (first F40), Kirsty Preece (second F35), Shirley Staveley (third F45) and Anne Ferguson (first F50).

Other notable Burnden finishers were Lesley Fisher (second F50) who made a welcome return, Jackie Beevers, who finished first F55 and, in one of the performances of the day, Ann Oliver claimed first F70 holding off the legendary Ron Hill for all but the last mile of the race.

Twenty-seven Roadrunners competed in the Lostock event, which in addition to being the first fixture in this year’s Central Lancs GP, counts towards the Burnden club championship.

Despite Martyn Politt’s third V45 and Neil Nuttall’s third place in the V65 category, it was the team performances which caught the eye in the men’s categories.

An excellent run by John Knowles helped the senior team into fourth out of the 10 competing clubs and the men’s vets team of Pollitt, Keith Thomas, Andy Staveley and Stewart Jones all ran strongly to win the team prize.

Pollitt, Thomas and Izzy Hughes all competed in a gruelling English Championship fell race the previous day.
