ATHLETICS: Bolton United Harriers juniors claimed a large haul of medals, including 11 gold, at the Greater Manchester Indoor Sportshall County Championships at SportCity in Manchester last Sunday.

The event for athletes aged 15 or under attracted a large field of entrants from across the region, including 26 from Bolton.

In the under-15s, Rob Makin took gold in the shot putt while Demi-Lee Scott picked up two golds for the U13s girls with wins in the two-lap sprint and the shot putt.

But the U11s were the stars of the show as they collected eight gold medals. Jack Smith won the boys vertical jump with a 51cm leap, nine- year-old Ellie Gettinby put in a brilliant performance to win the girls speed bounce with a score of 55, and Liam Doherty continued his excellent form winning golds in the three-lap race and the speed bounce, as well as being named athlete of the tournament.

The girls relay team of Anna Chadbond, Charlotte Plant, Lucy Wallwork and Sarah Mason were in superb form as they destroyed the rest of the field to triumph in the U11s race.

The only disappointment of the day was an injury to Nathaniel Marshall, aged nine, who had previously won all his six races in the league competition.

He won his heat in the one-lap sprint but was forced to pull out due to an ankle ligament injury.

Bronze: Sarah Mason U11 Girls long jump; Katie Oakley U11 Girls speed bounce; Olivia Wallis U15 Girls 4 lap race; Zak Rushworth, James Barrow, Jack Smith and Sammie Rennie U11 Boys 4x2 lap relay; Demi-Lee Scott, Sophie Reaper, Alice Bailey and Tamika Carr U13 Girls 4x2 lap relay.
