Harriers race to Pennine relay glory

Horwich Harriers stormed to glory in the Pennine Bridleway Relay.

The 10-man team took the honours on Sunday as they came home in 4hrs 53mins 47 secs — 59secs ahead of closest rivals Salford Harriers.

It is the second time Horwich have triumphed in the race — they also won it in 2007 — which starts and finishes in Waterfoot, Rossendale, and comprises five off-road stages over 47 hilly miles of the Lancashire and west Yorkshire moors.

The winning team was: Gary Priestley, Darren Kay, Alaistair Murray, Richard Howarth, Staurt Edmondson, James Kevan, Martyn Bell, Martin Jones, Brendan Boland and Mike Green.

Burnden Road Runners mixed team finished 26th out of the 92 and were fifth out of 17 in their category in 6.03.38.

The team was: Isaline Hughes/Kirsty Preece 1.15.27 (50th); Keith Thomas/Martyn Pollitt 1.29.49 (14th); Shirley Staveley/Don Nichol 1.19.00 (55th); Anne Ferguson/Jane Forrest 48.53 (40th); and Andy Staveley/John Knowles 1.10.29 (11th).

Radcliffe AC fielded two mixed teams. The A side of Gary Wilson, Robin Shiels, Anna Lupton, Neil Kirby, Mark Cartwright, Rachael Ellison, Anne Marie Rampley, Yasmin Parapia, Kevin McGilvray and Donna Cartwright came home in 6.22.56 to finish eighth mixed team and 42nd overall. The B side finished in 76th.

The club’s new 10-mile multi-terrain event, which runs over the local Nature Trail and Philips Park, takes place on Sunday.

The race headquarters is at Radcliffe Cricket Club.
