Clements shows age is no barrier

LEE Valley Athletics Centre was the venue on January 24 for the British masters indoor pentathlon championships, where Dartford Harrier Christine Clements emerged as the winner of the W55 age group.

With an inaugural club record score of 3,124 points, her results for the five events were as follows: 60m hurdles 12.0s, high jump 1.27m, shot putt 7.34m, long jump 3.46m and 800m 3m42.74s.

This weekend saw Lee Valley hosting the London Games open meeting, which had its popular debut in 2009.

With an entry of more than 800 this year, competition was fierce.

Seven athletes from Dartford Harriers produced excellent performances, with three competing in the U17s, three in the U20s and one in the senior age group.

Lucy Hickmott front ran to an 800m win in 2m27.2s in th U17 category, a personal best. Samantha Brown was fourth in the 60m hurdles final in 9.25 (pb), just outside the club record.

Her sister Natalie Hickmott, still an U17 athlete, made her indoor 400m debut in the U20 400m, with a third place in club record of 59.81s, more than nine seconds faster than the existing 17 age group club record.

U17 men: Robert Hammond - long jump second 5.77m.

U20 men: Tim Billings - shot putt first 13.78m, long jump fourth 5.96m; Adam Chalk - 60m hurdles fourth in the heat in 8.43s (improving his own club record), sixth in the final in 8.77s.

Senior ladies: Tracy Cunningham 200m first 26.7s, 400m third 61.31s.
