Burnden runners are muddy stars

ATHLETICS: Burnden Roadrunners veterans put on a good show in the mud of Leverhulme Park on Saturday to finish fourth out of 14 competing clubs and ahead of local rivals such as Horwich, Astley & Tyldesley and Chorley Harriers.

Keith Thomas was first home for Burnden completing the challenging course in a time of 40.51 to finish first V50.

Andy Staveley claimed third V45 in 41.37 with John Knowles and Stewart Jones in close pursuit. Shirley Staveley completed the Ladies race in 23.08 to finish second F45.

The previous week, Martyn Pollitt ran a blistering 58.46 at the Preston 10 with Keith Thomas also breaking the hour with a measured run of 59.59. Izzy Hughes claimed a personal best of 1.07.37 and Dave Pearson continued his determined comeback to complete the course in 1.10.49.

Meanwhile in stormy conditions on the North Wales coast, Andy Staveley finished 10th in the Penmaenmawr Fell Race in a time of 1.04.20, while Shirley Staveley was third F40 after completing the course in 1.25.05.
