UPBEAT coach Peter Moores believes Lancashire’s use of the outgrounds means that 2011 will be a thrilling roller-coaster of a season.

The ongoing development of Old Trafford has rendered the county HQ out of bounds for Championship fixtures this summer, aside from the seasonal finale against Hampshire.

Five games will be played insted at Liverpool’s Aigburth, with others at Blackpool and Southport and Birkdale.

And Moores reckons that means better cricket for the fans, as proven by last year’s Liverpool clash that went down to the wire and was dubbed as the greatest Championship game of all time.

“That was some game. In fact, that was a great game,” said Moores.

Lancashire won by three wickets in the most dramtic style in the final over and the Macclesfield-born former England coach added: “It is still the best four-day game I have ever been involved in.

“And that can happen at the outgrounds – the tracks are conducive to result cricket and that’s what you want.

“At the outgrounds you get better crowds as well and there is almost a festival atmosphere.

“Everyone wants that, the players, officials and the spectators. And hopefully the results will go our way.

“You can’t say that playing at the outgrounds gives you a definite advantage because the other side also likes to go out there.

“But you do have a say in how the track is prepared and that is a boost. You are, of course, at home.”
