BURNLEY FC'S plan to expand the Gawthorpe training ground was approved by borough councillors tonight.

The planning committed heeded the advice of council officers who said there were 'very special circumstances' for allowing the development on green belt land.

Clarets chiefs said the existing facilities fell 'well short of the standard expected for a club of this size and stature'.

The borough council's decision now has to be approved by the Secretary of State.

A spokesman for Burnley said they optimistic this would be granted in the next 21 days.

The club said: “Burnley Football Club would like to thank the council.”

The plans include a new indoor training arena, with changing rooms, a gym, referee's room, staff offices, a meeting area and kitchen.
