DANNY Karbassiyoon is likely to complete a transfer to AZ Alkmaar if his trial proves a hit, according to officials at the Dutch club.

The transfer-listed Burnley defender is training with AZ's reserve side in the hope of landing a permanent move and ending his Turf Moor stay.

Karbassiyoon's five-day trial in Holland, which is being closely monitored by AZ general manager Marcel Brands, is expected to end tomorrow.

And Alkmaar's club spokesman Erik van Leeuwen claims the American's chances of earning a contract could materialise.

"If he does really well, we might try to sign him," said van Leeuwen. "We just have to see how it goes."

AZ could soon be on the lookout for a new left-back with Dutch World Cup star Tim de Cler a target for Feyenoord, so Karbassiyoon may well fit the bill.

The Clarets are unlikely to attract a fee for the unsettled 21-year-old, who has only made six substitute appearances since joining from Arsenal last summer.

But with one year left on his contract, Karbassiyoon's exit would lighten Burnley's wage bill and afford manager Steve Cotterill more room to strengthen his squad.

Karbassiyoon will be desperate to prove his worth at last season's Eredivisie runners-up and resurrect his career after making little impact with the Clarets.

Signed from Highbury to compete for Burnley's left-back spot, Karbassiyoon has since failed to make any serious breakthrough.

He got off to an unfortunate start 12 months ago, picking up an pre-season injury against Cheltenham.

But during the course of the Championship campaign, he was unable to dislodge player of the year Jon Harley.

His last Clarets appearance came in February, against Coventry at the Ricoh Arena.
