I'M very optimistic about Burnley's chances in the Championship next season.

This is Steve Cotterill's third year as manager and I'm looking for us to finish in the best league position since he's been at Turf Moor.

I'm sure a top-six finish will be what Steve is looking for. I believe there's a chance of that, because we've got the nucleus of a good side who are gelling together.

Steve will be looking to take the team forward and I'm sure the chairman and supporters will give their backing.

Unfortunately, I did not go to Burnley's pre-season friendly at Accrington Stanley. My first look will be the friendly against Bolton Wanderers next Saturday.

The pleasing thing was to get off to a win. No matter who the opposition are, winning becomes a habit.

There are a few weeks to go before the league kicks-off and one position where I feel we need cover is at right-back.

I would like to see an out-and-out right back at the club.

For me, it's one of Steve's priorities and if he can bring somebody in, it would then complete a good squad and give us a strong back four.

I'm sure it's easier to find a good right-back than it is to find a good centre-forward.

Phil Bardsley came on loan from Manchester United for the last couple of months of the season. He was a good player, an out-and-out right-back.

We've played Michael Duff and Frank Sinclair out on the right, but they are not happy in that position and it stands out.

Generally, I'm pleased with the four players signed this summer.

Andy Gray was probably not 100 per cent fit last season.

There's a bit more for the public to see from Andy and I'm sure that he will come back stronger and better than last season.

I've not seen enough of Steve Jones, but he's certainly got lightning pace and potential.

Pace always troubles defenders and I'm sure he will cause a lot of problems.

Alan Mahon is a quality player and it's important we try to build the team around him.

He's got an absolutely tremendous left foot and the vision to pick out players around the 18-yard box.

Towards the end of last season he was sliding through excellent balls to the strikers.

I like to see Mahon coming off the right-hand side on his left foot and having a go from 20 to 25 yards.

With his shooting ability, he will score goals and then Gray and Jones are also there to pick up the pieces inside the box.

Mahon could be the best signing Steve has made at Burnley and £200,000 may well prove a bargain.
