A team of Blackburn Rovers youngsters claimed top spot in the national final of the Kickz Cup.

The under 16s team, coached by the club’s Community Trust, lifted the silverware at Derby County’s Pride Park.

Rovers beat Chelsea, Ports-mouth, Manchester City, and Middlesbrough in the group stages before beating Fulham on penalties in the final.

The competition connects with teenagers from key towns and cities across the country to convey powerful messages on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption.

Chris Hedley, BRFC Trust Kickz team manager, said: “All our players said they will remember the day for the rest of their lives. It’s great for young people to be given an unforgettable opportunity to play in such a well-respected tournament.

“Our team has been together for two years and I have seen them develop, not just as a football team, but into respectful, well-rounded individuals; in no small part thanks to the Kickz project.”

The Blackburn Rovers Comm-unity Trust delivers the Kickz project at two centres in the borough, Bangor Street Community Centre and Blackburn Rovers Sports Arena.

Match funding is provided by Blackburn with Darwen Comm-unity Safety Partnership and CXL.
